Today as we commemorate the 30th year anniversary of his death, here's some backstory. Tupac Amaru Shakur (born Lesane Parish Crooks; June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996), also known by his stage names 2Pac and Makaveli, was an American rapper and actor, regarded as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time. Academics regard him as one of the most influential music artists of the 20th century and a prominent political activist for Black America. In addition to his music career, Shakur also wrote poetry and starred in films. He is among the best-selling music artists, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide. His lyrical content has been noted for addressing social injustice, political issues, and the marginalization of other African-Americans, but he was also synonymous with gangsta rap and violent lyrics.

Shakur was born in New York City to parents who were both political activists and Black Panther Party members. Raised by his mother, Afeni Shakur, he relocated to Baltimore in 1984 and to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1988.

Tupac Amaru Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, in East Harlem, Manhattan, New York City to Afeni Shakur and Billy Garland. While born Lesane Parish Crooks, at age one he was renamed Tupac Amaru Shakur. He was named after Túpac Amaru II, a descendant of the last Incan ruler, who was executed in Peru in 1781 after his revolt against Spanish rule. Shakur's mother Afeni Shakur explained, "I wanted him to have the name of revolutionary, indigenous people in the world. I wanted him to know he was part of a world culture and not just from a neighborhood." Tupac's surname came from Lumumba Shakur, a Sunni Muslim, whom his mother married in November 1968. Their marriage fell apart when it was discovered that Lumumba was not Tupac's biological father.

During the later part of his career, Shakur was shot five times in the lobby of a New York recording studio in 1994 and experienced legal troubles, including incarceration. He served eight months in prison on now-proven fabricated sexual abuse charges after he allegedly assaulted Ayanna Jackson, but was released pending an appeal of his conviction in 1995. Following his release, he signed to Marion "Suge" Knight's label, Death Row Records and became heavily involved in the growing East Coast vs. West Coast hip-hop rivalry.

On September 7, 1996, Shakur was shot four times by an unidentified assailant in a drive-by shooting in Paradise, Nevada; while returning to his hotel room from Mike Tyson last official fight. Tupac Shakur had watched the Bruce Seldon vs. Mike Tyson boxing match with Marion "Suge" Knight, the head of Death Row Records, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. He died six days later at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada.

On July 18, 2023, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department executed a search warrant in connection with Shakur's murder. On September 29, 2023, the AP reported that Las Vegas Metropolitan Police had arrested a suspect, Duane "Keefe D" Davis, in Shakur's murder. Police had two months previously served a search warrant at his wife's home in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson. Davis pleaded not guilty on November 2, 2023, in Las Vegas. Unfortunately for Davis, his newfound penchant for seeking fame that entailed penning a tale-all book about being some sort of Compton Street Legend adjunct to singing like a canary in all the podcasts did him no favours as he literally opened the lid on a cold case & put himself at the centre of it all. He cooked his goose well in the globally-televised trial in August 2026 that has seen him convicted bÿ a jury for the murder of 2Pac with poetic justice & closure finally coming for the estate of Amaru Shakur.

The end is nigh!
Farewell to the international career of arguably the greatest player of the past generation, Lionel Andrés Messi.
The longevity has been simply stupendous.
From the first time he clambered off the bench as a wee lad in 2005 to date, the talent has been clear for all to see.
Imperious & sterling cannot do justice to the great career that has been enjoyed by Leo Messi.
The 8 balon d'ors (best annual global footballer) dwarf everybody else who has ever played the sport.
At inception, he looked like not living up to his potential as Argentina 🇦🇷 were odds-on favourites for many competitions only to flounder at the later stages.
That cold, listless gaze as he received the golden ball at the 2014 World Cup spoke volumes of a man who thought he would never do anything with his star-studded list of compatriots. Do not get me started on Copa América Centenario where he blazed a Penalty Kick over at the Finals, losing to Chile in the Summer of 2016.
He even considered retirement but rescinded it as he would have been selling the global sport short.
What a consequential decision?
The tide turned with 2021 Copa America win against then-defending Champions, Brazil.
Then the moment to validate his greatness came in Qatar in 2022 at the World Cup & he scorched the global game to ashes. Fortunately, this time round he had the cast to get him over the line & he did claim the gong his career deserved.
Despite being at an advanced age & having left the apex of the game in Europe eons ago, he still had enough in the tank to drag a lacklustre Argentina to their 2nd consecutive finals, going down to Spain.
He's so far scored 125 international goals whilst 100 looked a distant dream only a few years back.

We needn't mourn that the 🐐 is gone from the international game. We should celebrate that we've been here to witness the journey that cemented a legacy.

It is also in order to celebrate the indomitable & much-maligned terrier, Jalen Brunson as he's crowned the 2026 NBA's Finals Most Valuable Player. From being the littlest guy on the court (6'1) to now King of New York. That 45-point statement was the 2nd greatest performance in an NBA Finals close-out game of all time.
