At the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, India’s Narendra Modi publicly told Putin that the war must end. This matters because India is not a Western adversary: it has bought more than $170 billion of Russian oil since 2022 and helped keep Russia’s economy afloat.

But Modi also needs Washington, and India is unlikely to sacrifice its relationship with the world’s largest economy for a partner whose usefulness is declining.

So, was this simply diplomatic theatre? Or does it suggest that even Putin’s most important partners now believe his position is becoming unsustainable?

**HAVE CHEAP DRONES CHANGED THE BALANCE OF MILITARY POWER?**

In Episode 1 of my latest conversation with General David Petraeus, we explored how Iran and Ukraine are exposing a fundamental weakness in the Western way of war:

Iran remains militarily outmatched, yet drones, missiles and control of the Strait of Hormuz have given it what Petraeus calls a “weapon of mass disruption.” Ukraine, meanwhile, is deploying thousands of unmanned systems every day and transforming the battlefield faster than NATO can adapt.

Petraeus argues that the future of warfare is now largely unmanned—and that Western militaries remain dangerously unprepared for it.

So, have cheap drones permanently eroded America and NATO’s military advantage? Or will conventional firepower remain decisive?
