Pyotr Kurzin | Geopolitics

I’m Pyotr Kurzin, host of The Global Gambit. I’ve spent years working across Africa and Eastern Europe with the World Bank and the International Crisis Group, and trained in strategic studies and economic statecraft at Johns Hopkins SAIS. This isn’t second-hand commentary — it’s first-hand field and policy experience brought straight to you.

Half British and half Russian, I bring a Cold War lens to today’s conflicts and crises. Plenty of pundits sensationalise for clicks, but here you’ll get clarity and challenge. We all have biases — but the only way to really grow is to test them, step out of our comfort zones, and avoid echo chambers.

That’s exactly what this channel is for. And if that resonates with you, then you know where to Subscribe!

🇷🇺🇺🇦 Russia’s invasion of Ukraine just crossed a milestone Putin never imagined it would

His supposed 3-day SMO has npw lasted longer than the entire Soviet war against Nazi Germany.

1,418 days.

That’s how long the “Great Patriotic War” lasted, the defining feature of Russian endurance and sacrifice.

But the Ukraine War has now surpassed it.

This wasn’t meant to be a 4 year war of attrition. It was meant to be a 3-day operation.

Then a 3-week one. Then a “managed escalation”.

Instead, it has become something far worse for Moscow:

- A grinding, open-ended war that exposes the limits of Russian power every single day.
- No decisive victory.
- No strategic breakthrough.
- No political endgame.

Just mounting costs, eroding credibility, and a regime trapped by its own mythology.

The Soviet Union fought Nazi Germany for survival - but singlehandedly transformed the European theatre.

Putin is fighting Ukraine for his own prestige, control, and warped imperialist ambitions. And all the while destroying the country he seeks to protect and restore to its 'former glory'.

That contrast matters. Psychologically. Politically. Historically.

And the Kremlin knows it. But Putin will never accept it.

🇺🇸⚓️ 🇷🇺 America’s tanker seizure exposes its biggest but delicate asset.

It’s allies and alliance network.

The real story behind the US seizure of the Russian-flagged tanker isn’t Trump doing “America First” on his own.

Yes, the US hauled a sanctioned tanker across the North Atlantic and seized it under a federal warrant after a weeks-long pursuit.

But that isn’t unilateral muscle.

It is because of global reach made possible by America’s allies and their willingness to provide a base network.

Behind the headlines sit:

- Forward access in Europe and the Atlantic.
- Shared intelligence and interoperability with NATO partners.
- Port and logistics support that lets US Coast Guard and Navy patrol and sustain long-range interceptions.

Without NATO basing and allied cooperation, tracking and boarding a ship near Iceland after chasing it from the Caribbean would be quite that bit harder.

This wasn’t “just the US” - it was the US + allies who enable and even allow it to project its power as far as it does.

Which is why belligerent threats against Europe over Greenland aren’t just rude — they’re strategically self-sabotaging.

Undermine access and cooperation, and that reach collapses.

Allies are not a luxury.

They are the bedrock of America’s capacity to enforce sanctions and operate far from home.

Trump and MAGA would wise to remember that.

People wondering about some operation against Iran after Venezuela. Realistically:

Some clandestine activities and psych ops to intensify the situation that already exists between Iranian protesters and the regime.

Similar to above, but cyberattacks and disruptive measures to impede regimes comms or surveillance.

Potentially airstrikes on specific military installations to weak critical IRGC positions and capabilities.

What l think unrealistic/ logistically hard:

Some kind of Venezuelan special forces operation to take out the leadership directly.

Caracas was right on the shoreline and easy to access vs Tehran which is miles away. Moreover Iran despite the 12 day war is still more formidable than Venezuela ever was.

So not really some large ground offensive by either Israel or USA.
