Attention all crane operators! As per ADNOC standards, it's mandatory to have a minimum of 5 wraps of wire rope on the drum to ensure safe operation. Please refer to the attached picture for clarification. Don't compromise on safety, even if you're experienced. One wrap is not enough and can lead to serious injury or even death. Always prioritize safety and think about your family's well-being. Let's work together to maintain a safe working environment.

ABOUT A CRANE'S SWING LOCK

1. A Crane's swing lock mechanism prevents the Crane's rotating superstructure from rotating unintentionally.

2. Ensuring safety during operation and prevent potential damage.

3. It's a crucial safety feature, particularly on the CRANES with swing bearings

4. Prevents unintentional swinging
- The primary function is to hold the Crane's superstructure firmly in the place, preventing it from rotating due to wind, momentum or operator error

5. Enhances safety
- By preventing unexpected swings, the swing lock minimizes the risks of accidents, injury and damage to the crane, it's load or surrounding structures

6. Enables controlled movements,
- When the swing lock is disengaged, it's allows the operator, to precisely control the Crane's swing, enabling accurate load positioning

7. Reduces wind Load
- When crane is not in operation, a swing lock can be disengaged, to allow the crane to weather vane, minimizing the wind's impact on the crane

8. Provides stability
- In some cases, swing lock maybe used to stabilize the crane during lifting operations, particularly when you lift heavy loads

9. Automatic swing Lock
- Some of the crane, utilize an automatic swing lock to automatically lock the boom at the base of the slewing post while traveling, enhancing safety during transporting

10. Swing brake
- Some cranes may also have a swing brake that provides holding power in both directions to prevent movement of rotating superstructure.

Understanding Boom Deflection on Mobile Cranes โ€“ Why It Matters

As someone working in the crane industry, I wanted to share a critical but often overlooked topic: boom deflection, particularly on telescopic mobile cranes.

๐Ÿ“‰ What happens when we lift a load?
The moment a crane lifts its rated capacity, several components begin to flex under stress:
- Outriggers and chassis may deflect and twist, increasing the lifting radius.
- The telescopic boom itself will naturally bend downward, especially when working with a fully extended boom.

๐Ÿ”„ All of these combine to slightly increase the actual radius, sometimes beyond the radius used during planning or setup. And thatโ€™s where the danger lies.

๐Ÿ” Why is this important?
Crane charts list loaded radii, meaning the radius after deflection. But if operators don't account for the change, the lift could unknowingly exceed the crane's safe working limit. This can lead to overload or even failure.

โš ๏ธ As the boom deflects and then rebounds slightly during lifting, it can cause the load to swing unexpectedly. This movement can shock load the crane, placing sudden and excessive force on the structure, potentially exceeding safe limits even if the static load was within the chart.

โœ… Practical safety measures:
- Start the lift with a shorter radius to compensate for deflection.
- Always perform lifts on firm, level ground with outriggers fully deployed.
- Use experience (or measurement tools) to predict and verify actual loaded radius.
- Brief operators and dogman before lifting to discuss hazards of boom deflection and how it impacts the radius and load control.
- Where possible, utilize a crane with a higher lifting capacity. Itโ€™s never ideal to be operating near the maximum rated load.
- Avoid performing lifts in windy conditions, especially with long booms or light loads.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Boom deflection may seem like a minor detail, but in lifting, a few extra centimetres at the hook can be the difference between a safe job and a serious incident. Please feel free to comment your own thoughts and experiences!
