Happy International Day of the African Child
It’s my birthday, but bear with me, cos I am a writer, after all. I like to do things my own way. It’s that time again, and I am delighted that I am joining the world to celebrate the Day of the African Child to create an uplifting, open, and joyful space because together, our stories can change the world.
You may need to be reminded that June 16, 1971, remains a memorable day, now and in the days to come. On this day, more than 20,000 South African students in the township of Soweto took to the streets, in protest against the poor quality of education they received, and demanded to be taught in their own language. In response, we read that armed police officers made the heinous act of murdering hundreds of protesters, the act that drove the country into marking this day as the International Day of the African Child. We celebrate these brave children who lost their lives defending their rights.
Much has happened since then, good, ugly, and nasty. For example, because of the technology that is available on the Internet, you can send an email to anyone in the world with delivery in under 60 seconds. But considering that the lives of children are greatly impacted by the digital environment, its effect can be vicious hence the 2023 International Day of the African Child theme "The Rights of the Child in the digital environment”
So, just to clarify, this year’s theme is a wake-up call so we can get on with what really matters: advocacy- and make it our admirable goal to know the required infrastructure necessary to ensure child online safety.
The internet has brought untold benefits and is known to present vast opportunities and possibilities but this is not without risks and vulnerabilities. For example, there have been many situations involving the Solicitation of a minor(s) involving asking or engaging in a conversation with a minor(s) and in the process, asking them for a physical meeting.
Clearly, the intention is to lure the child to commit crimes, engage in sexual acts or kidnap the child and seek a ransom.
Other crimes include; Cyberbullying, Identity theft and online fraud, and Child pornography.
As a parent or guardian, it can be easy to get lost inside our personal lives and lose all sense of perspective. Each day can feel like a lot. Seemingly never-ending to-do lists; looming deadlines; with demands from every area of your life. It's a lot. And it's especially a lot when really all you wanna do is search for bread and butter, but you can't quite get it- or life is being lifey and getting in the way.
Please be alert! In recent times, children have become a more vulnerable group and there have been many cases of children getting into dangerous situations that sometimes have detrimental effects on them. So let us hold our hands through the process and be smart online by carving out time for the thing that matters most.
When using a mobile phone, switch off the data and only put it on to do something specific. This also applies to computers. Discipline your habit by spending more time on outdoor activities and other hobbies instead of using the Internet. Such include hiking and running for fitness, road biking, running, jogging and trail running, etc.
Finally, it’s my day! Do not skip my birthday party due to excessive internet use. The hunt for the perfect birthday gift is officially on. From sparkling frost water and wine-tasting sets to delicious cakes with sprinkles and frosting. check out for fresh flower bouquets, sumptuous beauty sets, and luxury afternoon tea hampers for me.
Happy Birthday me (Justus)
