Our trans and queer family and friends need you right now!
Deep in the Heart of Texas, we are at the epicenter of anti-queer activism. And I'm fighting mad to have to report we are losing ground and, on one level, their propaganda is working. I'll get to that, but first let me fill you in...
This is me with my kids — a blended family of all non-biologically related kids not ruined by being raised by gay moms! (You may have met Mason before, on the left, as he's been on the pod.)
Visibility is important — this is just one of a zillion configurations — families like ours make up a rainbow of biology and color and legalities ... It includes kids by anonymous and known donors, foster & adoption, surrogacy, aunties, grammies, papa's — it's a beautiful hodgepodge of chosen family and willingness to take responsibility for one another despite legal definitions of marriage and prescriptions for social roles.
Our families and especially our trans friends and families are back on our heels right now and could use some love and attention.
Unfortunately, the numbers don't lie - A new Gallup poll from May 2026 shows a dramatic reversal after two decades of progress. Support for LGBTQ+ rights has eroded across the political spectrum, but the drop among Republicans is severe: support for same-sex marriage has plummeted from 55% to 37% in just four years. On transgender rights—the front line of this battle—only 5% of Republicans now view being transgender as morally acceptable, down from 22% five years ago.
This matters because it's literally dangerous. Hate crimes have exploded in America—we've gone from about 5,800 reported incidents in 2015 to nearly 12,000 today. Black Americans are hit hardest, followed by Jewish Americans. LGBTQ people are third. But here's what's brutal: more than half of the anti-LGBTQ hate crimes target trans and gender-nonconforming people. That's no accident. It tracks directly with the explosion in anti-trans messaging and policy.
And the violence concentrates on those with the least power to fight back. Seventy-eight percent of transgender homicides involve people of color. Black transgender women make up 56 percent of all trans homicide victims in America.
When politicians dehumanize people with their words, those words turn into violence.
What does this have to do with PRIDE month? PRIDE month isn't just about parades and picnics with rainbow flags and snappy merch. PRIDE was a riot! It started with drag queens at Stonewall fighting police raids. It was resistance. It was survival. It was particularly trans women of color risking everything to say: we exist, we deserve to exist, and we will fight for it. So, today, PRIDE is a reminder.
That is exactly why several states have engaged in counter-programming. They are literally rebranding June itself. Alabama calls it "Strong Families Month," Arkansas and Utah call it "Fidelity Month," Indiana and Tennessee declared it "Nuclear Family Month," and a small town in Texas concurred, declaring June the time to recognize "God-ordained husband and wife marriages." The absurdity of celebrating straightness feels almost quaint until you realize it's a coordinated erasure.
What This Means Here and Now (This part is depressing, but we have to talk about it! Build your window of capacity, stay with me...)
Right here in Austin, Texas
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton expanded bans on gender-affirming care to include mental health providers—counselors, therapists, psychologists, and social workers can no longer provide gender-transitioning support to minors, including talk therapy. For many LGBTQ youths surviving in an actively hostile state, this is designed to cut off their only lifeline. We aren't letting it.
Nationally
The Human Rights Campaign has officially declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people in the United States. More than 75 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been signed into law in 2026 alone—more than doubling the previous worst year on record.
Congress is pushing a national "Don't Say Gay" law that would require schools to get parental approval before changing a child's pronouns, name, or gender markers. This puts vulnerable LGBTQ+ young people at risk of forced outings and parental harm.
States are advancing so-called "sex definition" laws that redefine sex across entire legal codes in ways that exclude transgender and nonbinary people from legal recognition.
And it's not just trans rights under attack.
At least 19 states have laws restricting the teaching of LGBTQ+ concepts in schools, which means gay and lesbian young people can't see their own lives reflected in the curriculum or in books. An analysis found that 29% of all banned books in 2023-2024 featured LGBTQ+ people and themes—including classic LGBTQ+ literature with gay and lesbian characters. States are advancing laws against drag performances, attacking the cultural spaces where gay and lesbian communities have always gathered.
The agenda privileges only "nuclear" families for adoption and foster care, preventing gay and lesbian couples from building families and closing doors to children who need homes.
Marriage equality itself—won in 2015—is now under threat as legal experts warn Obergefell v. Hodges may be reconsidered by the Supreme Court. The irony is sharp: they're punishing gay and lesbian couples for practicing the exact conservative values they claim to hold dear—commitment, responsibility, and responsibly raising the next generation.
Meanwhile, single and queer couples building families through donor insemination face new insurance barriers that make starting a family exponentially more expensive and complicated. Florida is cutting funding for its AIDS Drug Assistance Program, putting life-saving medication at risk for thousands of people living with HIV.
Federal investigations are opening into schools with gender-inclusive policies. A federal ban on transgender military service is under review, threatening to discharge qualified transgender service members and recruits who have already deployed.
I could go on....
The attacks are comprehensive.
No surprise here, but Pride flags are now barred from federal buildings for a reason.
So, when you see a pride flag, remember - Visibility in a moment of erasure is an act of resistance. The people who came before us didn't fight so we could have a nice parade in 2026. Pride is a reminder: we're still here. We're still fighting. And we're still worth fighting for.
How You Can Show Up
Support our people directly. The corporations slapping rainbows on their logos in June and disappearing by July aren't where our energy should go. Our energy should go to trans and queer entrepreneurs who are building community, creating healing, and centering the people this system is designed to hurt.
Shop Queer and Trans-Owned Businesses—All Year
Ash & Chess — Kingston, NY-based stationery and art by queer and trans creators Ashley Molesso and Chess Needham. Bold, joyful, culturally rooted designs. Over 1,000+ retailers stock them, but order direct at ashandchess.com to support the creators. They've also written multiple books, including Queer Tarot: An Inclusive Deck and Guidebook.
Dr. DHT — Trans-owned skincare and beard care for trans men and trans mascs. A portion of every sale goes to their Gender-Affirming Surgery Grant—they're currently awarding $300 grants to trans and nonbinary people for top surgery, bottom surgery, and other gender-related procedures. Find them at drdht.com
Stealth Bros & Co — Trans-owned medical storage founded by Braxton Fleming (a trans man who appeared on Shark Tank). They make luxury dopp kits and sharps disposal containers designed with care and pride. Now in 3,000+ CVS stores nationwide, but you can shop direct and ensure proceeds go directly to the creators at stealthbrosco.com
Sharkboy Stuff — Queer-owned apparel, stickers, comics, and accessories from New Jersey. 25% of profits go directly to nonprofits and mutual aid funds—they rotate which organizations each month. Shop at sharkboystuff.com or on Etsy.
Not sure where to start? The National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) certifies over 2,000 LGBTQ-owned businesses. Search their directory and support them year-round, not just in June.
Show Up Locally
Find trans and queer organizations in your community fighting on the ground. Donate. Volunteer. Show up to city council meetings when they're debating trans-inclusive policies. This stuff is won block by block, not in Washington.
Have the Hard Conversations
The polling shift didn't happen by accident. It happened because people heard anti-queer messaging—from politicians, from the media, from peers—and some of them started believing it. If someone in your life has shifted, talk to them. Not to convince, necessarily, but to remind them: you know us. You love us. We're still the same people you knew five minutes ago.
In Closing
This June, when you see a Pride flag, remember what it represents. Think of the trans women of color who organized ACT UP while the government let people die. It represents the queer and trans people in Texas and Mississippi and Florida and everywhere else who are still fighting, still organizing, still showing up. And it represents you—if you choose to care. If you choose to act.
Our trans and queer family and friends need to know you care. Not just in June. Not just with a hashtag. But with your time, your money, your voice, and your presence.
We're still here. We're still fighting.
Happy Pride.

To every survivor of Jeffrey Epstein and his network:
We see your profound, deliberate, ongoing, soul and life-threatening betrayal — by predators, enablers, and systems that chose power and reputation over your safety. We understand it's not over.
Your courage in coming forward — whether publicly, privately, or quietly, within yourself — is not lost on us. You have been called liars. You have been threatened, silenced, and made to watch the people who hurt you walk free and stay powerful. You faced not just predator(s), but an entire architecture of disbelief — lawyers, prosecutors, institutions, and powerful men AND women who closed ranks and worked together to make this reality disappear.
We believe you and stand with you without reservation, without asterisks, and without placing any conditions on our support. To grasp what you are telling us, we must allow ourselves to see true human evil, which is where many fail to imagine. We know it's true, and your survival is remarkable. We are listening and will continue to listen and speak up until the full network of perpetrators and enablers is held accountable.
In solidarity.
