British National Michael Riley Extradited to Spain in Double Murder of Scottish Gang Leaders

Michael Terrence Riley, a 45-year-old British national, is currently in custody at Soto del Real prison, facing charges for the double murder of two prominent figures from the Lyons criminal clan in Fuengirola, Spain, last May.

Riley is accused of the cold-blooded and professional shooting of Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jr., who were attacked inside and outside a local pub. Following the killings, Riley fled to the United Kingdom, where he was arrested two weeks later.
The extradition process initially faced legal obstacles, with Riley’s defense arguing he suffered from depression and anxiety, and citing concerns for his personal safety in Spanish prisons. However, Riley reversed his strategy in October and agreed to be handed over to Spanish authorities, allowing the judicial process to move forward.
The Spanish National Police have highlighted the suspect’s high level of preparation, noting that he had reportedly studied security camera positions and planned an escape route to a country lacking an extradition treaty with Spain.

The case is contextualized as part of the violent, nearly two-decade-long feud between the Scottish criminal clans, the Lyons and the Daniel families, centered in Glasgow.
