In the 1944 film Gaslight, a husband secretly dims the gas lights in the house, then insists to his wife that nothing has changed. Over time, she begins to question her own memory, perception, and sanity.

That’s where the term gaslighting comes from: manipulating someone into doubting what they know to be true.
