Biomedical and Life Sciences Simplified

A collection of videos about biomedical sciences, life sciences and cell biology.

I have over 25 years of experience teaching biomedical and life sciences student, and over 30 years experience of working as a scientist. On this channel I aim to simplify some of the key ideas and concepts of the biomedical and life sciences, and share my expertise. The channel also covers some of the tricky lab maths you may find in the subjects.

The one about how a group of scientists were outsmarted by a potato.... and the rice wasn't a success.

A true story about some research I was involved with on rice and potatoes.

Why was the pig genetically engineered? Answer - to stop it from polluting the environment.

It sounds like the start of a bad joke, but it is actually a true story about pigs, mice, and a bacterial gene.

How did genetically engineered mice help us understand COVID-19?

Luckily for us, we had a mouse model we could use to help us understand COVID-19 but why did the mouse have to be engineered?

This is an interesting and quite scary genetic engineering method I came across - gene drives.

If you want to know more about gene drives, then have a look at the video below.

Do you think we should use gene drives? Let me know in the comments.

In the third video in a series on genetic engineering, I look at using CRISPR to engineer babies, specifically targeting the CCR5 gene to prevent HIV transmission. It is interesting and sad story.

A new video on genetic engineering was posted.

In the video, I look at how genetic engineering has been used to protect cotton and cabbages from insects by introducing toxin genes and how rice has been made healthier.
