Dr. Alireza Golchini, a general surgeon at Dehkhoda Hospital in Qazvin, has been arrested for providing medical care to protesters injured during Iran’s national uprising.

According to reports, Dr. Golchini has been falsely accused of espionage and sentenced to death. But he did not commit a crime. He upheld his oath as a physician, treated the wounded and saved lives.

The United Nations actually has the tools to protect Iranians - from a systematic massacre, but get caught up in their own bureaucracy rendering them ineffective.

Take for example the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) passednin 2005. It should have been used several times in #Iran since 2005 (Green Revolution 2009; Woman, Life, Freedom Movement 2022; and Now), but the UN fears repercussions from using it more than protecting the lives it was meant to protect.

The UN Security Council is also structured in a way to be ineffective by granting a few countries to hold a veto. When it comes to Iran, Russia and China always use their veto power to stop action against the Islamic regime and protect them. This outdated model needs to change and the actions of totalitarian regimes must face serious consequences.

R2P applies to Iran NOW because the regime has become the very perpetrator by :

- Mass shooting unarmed civilians and charging their families with high amounts of so called bullet fees,
- Denying the ordinary burials and basic dignity,
- Invading hospitals and executing injured civilians,
- Attacking and shooting into civilian houses where people take shelter,
- Carrying out mass arrests, abuses and executions without fair trials,
- Shutting down the internet to proceed in silence without media coverage.

When a state commits such severe crimes against humanity - to its own citizens, its sovereignty is no longer to be respected. The world has a responsibility to act against the regime and protect the people. Silence is complicity.
