As we mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, we recognize its enduring significance in advancing gender equality worldwide. However, in Azerbaijan, women’s rights remain under serious threat.
Women journalists, activists, and human rights defenders face systematic repression, including harassment, arbitrary detention, and violence. Additionally, restrictive laws and judicial persecution are used to silence those advocating for equality and justice.
Female journalists such as:
Sevinj Vagifgizi Nargiz Absalamova Elnara Gasimova Aynur Elgunesh Aitaj Ahmadova Aysel Umudova Khayala Agayeva Shahnaz Beylerqizi have been imprisoned simply for doing their jobs. Reports indicate that they face ill-treatment in detention and suffer from a lack of proper medical care.
Gender-based violence remains widespread and is often met with impunity. Deep-rooted patriarchal norms and authoritarian governance further marginalize women from political and public life.
Therefore, we call for the immediate release of these journalists and urge like-minded states to fully implement the commitments of the Beijing Platform by ensuring the protection of women’s rights, repealing laws that restrict fundamental freedoms, and fostering an environment that enables women’s participation in civil society. The international community must hold governments accountable for violations and support independent women-led initiatives. Without genuine commitment and accountability, the promise of Beijing remains unfulfilled.

Mr. President,
As we mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, we recognize its enduring significance in advancing gender equality worldwide.
Sevinj Vagifgizi
Nargiz Absalamova
Elnara Gasimova
Aynur Elgunesh
Aitaj Ahmadova
Aysel Umudova
Khayala Agayeva
Shahnaz Beylerqizi
have been imprisoned simply for doing their jobs.
Thank you.
