Something has finally snapped in panda.
Was it the heat? Was it the Beer? Was it the 3 weeks of Techno?

We will never truly know for sure but the Panda has finally dropped... The breakbeat challenge. 

Your challenge is to build an original track centered entirely around a complex, syncopated drum rhythm. You must avoid the predictable, driving repetition of a 4-on-the-floor kick pattern (no standard house, techno, or disco formulas allowed). 

Classic examples of Breakbeat Samples/Patterns:

The Winstons – "Amen, Brother" (1969)
James Brown – "Funky Drummer" (1970)
Incredible Bongo Band – "Apache" (1973)
Lyn Collins – "Think (About It)" (1972)
The Honey Drippers – "Impeach the President" (1973)

Bobby Byrd – "Hot Pants - Bonus Beats" (1971)
Led Zeppelin – "When the Levee Breaks" (1971)

WEEKEND CHALLENGE:

Part Three: The AFTERMATH

First, there was the brutal yet ultimately victorious combat in The Dome, followed by the heroic Revolution. Peaceful times have followed the uprising and culture has settled into a new paradigm. Steeped in the lore of the ancient ruins of De-Troit where the Revolution began, folk tales of other similarly influential places thousands of miles away circulate through the neo-society. Whispers of “Chef-Field”, “Glass-Ghee” and “Man-Chester” are often heard, in tales of wonderful times and crazy parties of days gone by.

Of course in this post-apocalyptic world, resources are much more scarce than in the past. The contemporary culture celebrates improvisation with few starting elements, the more creative with the least components, the more worthy it is deemed. This of course applies to music as much as any other creative endeavour. No one creating music in this era has more than two instruments. Also, the ancient concept of “Mel-o'Dee” is sometimes mentioned but most of the popular music that is made features strange, broken yet hypnotic rhythms and weird, innovative harmonic and melodic structures unlike anything from the past.

This is all a very long-winded way of telling you that this weekend challenge is that old favourite, a TWO BOX CHALLENGE. Simple version - you can use two sound generators, eg a drum machine and a synth. You can of course use sequencers, effects, recording gear, mixer etc etc but the challenge is to be as creative as you can with just a couple of things that generate your sounds. And of course, please try and make a jam that would be popular in the somewhat strange post-revolutionary future world! Reference to the early days of techno clubs will of course be very much appreciated!

The challenge is open to jams made during this weekend, and keep it under 5 minutes. Don’t use copyrighted video or audio. To submit your jam, fill in the form using the link below and drop a comment under this post with a link to your jam too. We will have a stream through with all the jams on Monday evening and a playful vote until Thursday. The form will close automatically once the stream starts, so if you’re late, you’re out!

Part Two: THE REVOLUTION

In a post-apocalyptic future, our hero has conquered their enemies in brutal combat in The Dome. But this victory was not just for themselves. This victory was a spark for The Revolution. Our hero rallies up the crowds behind their cause, fighting against oppression and injustice. The newly unearthed ruins of the ancient city of De-Troit become a base for this revolution.

Your challenge this weekend is to make a jam set in this scenario. Make a jam to become an anthem which rallies listeners behind a worthy cause. Your jam should inspire courage and hope. Bonus points if you can include references to Detroit (techno, Detroit rap, Motown…) Despite the theme, let’s keep real world politics out of it.
