This week’s challenge is to dive into the world of modal harmony. Music theory? I don’t like music theory!!! Ok, well fortunately this isn’t that hard. Essentially, you pick a scale and then start on a note other than the root. So, if we pick C major and you start on the D note then you get a different pattern of tones and semi-tones and so it sounds different – you get a D dorian scale which is a minor scale with a raised 6 note. If you were to start on the E then you get a different pattern of tones/semi-tones and so you get a different sound again – this time E phrygian – a darker sounding minor scale.
My plan for this is:
- Pick a scale
- Start on a different note
- Use the chords from that scale
So, if I pick E phrygian, I might have a chord progression with Em, F, and C and centre my melodies around the E note.

The obvious extension to this is that you could pick a different starting scale – e.g. melodic minor and start on a different note. Then you would really be getting some interesting colours – again though, I would work out the notes and the chords from the parent scale and then jam away.
Usual rules apply – Jams must be made this weekend and please keep them to 5 mins or less. Make a video of some sort for your jam and upload it to your YouTube channel as “public” or “unlisted”. Fill in the form at the enclosed link with a link for your jam, before the start of the stream on Monday. Please avoid using copyrighted sounds or visuals.

GOLDEN SPRINKLES CHALLENGE.
It’s our JamDad’s special day this weekend; a very significant, indeed a Golden BIRTHDAY!
Please make JRC a present in the form of a jam (that’s his favourite you know).
Make a homage to JRC’s unique and glorious style, be it some banging 90’s inspired techno, or Jazzy Sprinkles, perhaps a little mumble-rap? Or maybe make a jam that honours JRC. Remember - without his passion for HWJ none of this would be happening.
Extra jam points for a one-and-only take jam from scratch (which always tickles his fancy) and even more extra jam points to do it as a “one-box jam-from-scratch challenge” which is one of his favourite challenges; but more importantly - send our JRC some love on this special day.
