Hi everyone, I'm Damian.
I'm a Perth Fishing nut that loves to get out in my tinny to catch a feed and just enjoy the ocean life.
I like to keep things simple, relatable and show how I do things to achieve success with a very modest setup.
Come join in on the adventures every Sunday arvo, have a laugh at my expense, and hopefully you get some fun and value out of the vids!

Alright guys, I said I would put my money where my mouth is when it comes to my thoughts on the current Demersal Fishery in the Western Bio-region.

I would encourage anyone who hasn't provided their suggestions to do so on DPIRD's website, link below ๐Ÿ‘‡

www.dpird.wa.gov.au/environment-and-sustainabilityโ€ฆ

It's really important that we all get involved and offer up our ideas and insights on this fishery, otherwise, it's fate will be decided without us!

I would spend more time on the water than many rec fishers (I would think ๐Ÿค”), and whilst I definitely see a healthy number of fish out there, especially when it comes to Pinkies, average sizes are generally becoming smaller, particularly on the inshore scene.
It is great to see that the pure numbers are up on previous years, however, we can't keep taking all the breeding stock until we have a perpetual population of juvenile fish incapable of reproduction.

In my opinion, there are many possible strategies that could be considered, for example (and these are just some suggestions for conversation sake, so please, don't shoot me!):

โ€ข Allowing only 1 licence per household address for daily demersal bag limit, no taking the whole family of kids out to maximise your catch!

โ€ข Issuing seasonal "virtual tag" allowance per licenced fisher or residential address (number TBA?) - This functionality can be added to the existing capture reporting portal rather than adding physical tags which are clumsy, can be lost and add cost. Also, virtual tag limits can be spot audited at any point in time for real time data on fishing pressures.

โ€ข Extend and replicate all Demersal restrictions to the land based fishery

โ€ข Mandatory reporting of demersal captures, ย including releases, whether in or out of season - this will improve data collection and integrity for future strategies. This too could be considered for the land based fishery

โ€ข Mandatory "first 2 legal fish" take rule regardless of species. I.e if 2 sized snapper, or 1 baldie and 1 breaksea, or 2 breaksea etc. but can't release and "upgrade" or "exchange" Demersal species

โ€ข Set maximum tags for commercial sector and close season for breeding on both commercial and recreational sectors.

โ€ข If any blanket closures or reduced limits are to be considered, it needs to be across both sectors and long enough to make a REAL difference, not just a token closure.

The last one is a real challenge....

It doesn't just impact our way of life, it also presents some major economic hurdles on both the rec and commercial sectors, including their supporting industries.
This should be a last resort and only considered once SOLID data has been collected and analysed (in my opinion).

I know this will likely raise some eyebrows and it's meant to, so let's get talking about it!

Regards,
Damo.
