In messing around with Gameshark codes I managed to somehow brute force my way into running Toy Story 2 in OG Game Boy mode on a Game Boy Color. It’s one of the black cartridge releases that plays on both original and Color hardware, but on the original there’s a ton of noticeably different changes to graphics I guess to have them work better on the older hardware. There’s otherwise literally no normal way to view this altered version on a Game Boy Color since it automatically always defaults to the Color version. It’s also super corrupt running in this mode; you can see some weird glitching in the images but during screen transitions the whole previous image is corrupted into the next screen. It’s really trippy

I’ve had this in my posession for a while now but have rarely really touched it since I don’t actually own a player, and I haven’t had a real urge to get one because there’s not a whole lot for the format that’s really enticing to me? The big ones at least for me are this and the special edition release since they’re the only widescreen releases not based on a digital master and thus match the theatrical print more in terms of color; but beyond that I’d also want to pick up the Star Wars trilogy as they’re the best quality releases of the films in their pre-special edition forms, and also if I’m willing to import I believe one of the Ghibli box sets includes the only releases of the Streamline English dubs of Kiki’s Delivery Service and Porco Rosso. But otherwise… I don’t know? Maybe I just haven’t looked into Laserdisc releases that thoroughly but a lot of the films and releases I’m interested in are a lot easier to find on VHS or DVD (albeit hacked down to 4:3 with the former). It seems to just come down to what special features included on what releases and whether or not I’m willing to fully commit to learning Japanese because there’s unsurprisingly a TON of stuff exclusive to there.

I tried a recount of my collection and I think it’s around or above the 800 mark now? It’s really difficult to tell whether or not certain sets or multipacks count as one or multiple and it’s probably never going to reach a 100% accurate count, but even with those in mind I think it’s likely at least 800 items scattered here and there. I find various figures and stuff all around my room so it’s always never been a totally perfect count.

The quality drop on Mattel products apparently extends to Imaginext too. I got one of those blind boxes and was a bit shocked with how stark of a difference between the two “paint” jobs were when comparing it to the figure I got in 2019/2020. It doesn’t show up as well in photos but the new one’s paint and general plastic quality feel about on par with a bootleg, not an officially licensed product. The seam on his right hand is thick enough that it looks like it’d pop out with basic play. Not sure if they just skimped out on the cheap blind box figures but considering how normally high quality and pretty well respected the Imaginext figures are this really sucks.
(The wing one might be a bit different in terms of its molding as the wingless figure, but my original wingless one was chewed up by my puppy in 2021 so I can’t directly compare the two).

I finally managed to pick up a copy of Scare Island on PS2 and complete my Pixar PS2 collection. Considering it’s a PAL game and basically every PS1 and PS2 game’s EU releases I’ve seen have language selects I figured even if this was a French release it’d have an English option.
It does not. It is exclusively French. Les Adventures de Sulli et Bob. Oui oui. And then to make matters even more absurd despite going out of my way to buy the PS3 memory card adaptor for $60 a few months ago to be able to transfer saves between systems and also to be able to put the memory card hack on the PS2 and region free the system, I ALSO learned that my PS2 fat is DEAD, so I can only play this or any other PAL game now through PC emulation (since you can run physical games on them through a disc drive).

Tomy has a new movie scale Hi-Tech Buzz figure out which looks really cool. The wings have a very elaborate opening and closing process.
The import prices, on the other hand, do NOT look very cool.
