Today I Found Out

One of our most prolific long time authors (and one of the biggest brains I have ever met :-)), The Professor, Gilles Messier, wrote a deep dive script for us on the mystery of singing sands a few months back. We just published the video. If you like interesting science videos, this one is super fascinating. And also fascinating how humans have figured out soooooo much about the natural world, but still these edge case mysteries that seem like they should be super simple to explain at first... But then even with all human technology and ideas and study of the phenomenon, we still can't figure it out! :-) I really loved this one. -Daven

Today I Found Out

If you want a good laugh, the animal behavior gets pretty funny in this one https://youtu.be/heHCf6xO6sE Let alone how insanely fascinating bees are embedded. From how they calculate direction based on the sun's position at a given moment even when it's on the other side of the world (and continue to make that calculation as time passes whether they can see the sun or not) to heater bees to how they regulate job distribution, to their dance language... One of the coolest animal facts sections. Let alone Dead Duck Day, which is darkly hilarious. Hippo mating, etc. etc. This one's really good. :-)

Today I Found Out

YouTube just informed me that this is our 12 year anniversary of this channel, which for those who don't know was one of two that launched the Whistlerverse. (TopTenz being the other. :-)) You can see our full channel history and how Simon and I met, despite living on opposite sides of the world, and how we got started on YouTube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=762TD...

All absolutely bonkers for originally a humble website started (in 2009) partially as a part of my then productive procrastination philosophy of time efficiency to get crap done. :-) Don't fight the distraction. That just takes mental energy. Instead, just make that time productive in some way! :-) Funny how much if the brain doesn't want to do one thing in a given moment, it will be willing to do almost literally anything else if you make the deal with it, and deadlines and specific things actually needing getting done ensure all the rest you're supposed to be doing gets done too, all for maximal time efficiency and productivity! ...Or how 16 years younger me really needed to learn more discipline. ;-) BUT learning knew things and sharing with others always super enjoyable as well, and here we are today somehow!

In any event, thank you to everyone who has watched our work over the years, and supported us as well on Patreon and YouTube Memberships. Algorithm changes are constant, occasional revenue valleys inevitable, and videos with the depth we go to are not cheap, but we've been able to keep this going and feed our and our staff's families thanks to all of you.

And not at all because we keep everyone locked in the basement...

Listen, they LIKE IT THERE. All cares of the outside world cease to exist in the basement, and there is security and comfort in the purpose and rigid structure the basement and feeding tubes provide. And the daily motivational beatings? You know how after you've been sick, feeling normal feels AMAZING for a little while instead of just plain Jane normal? Well, just think how good our authors and producers feel when the beatings stop for a few minutes! Let alone how it spurs productivity! And as we all know, a key tenant of happiness and fulfillment in life is accomplishing things. It's SCIENCE! They should thank us, if anything.

But for real, thank you for making this career possible. As ever, if you have any improvements or changes you'd like to see you think would make our work even better for you, baste us like one of your French girls... Or however that quote is supposed to go. ;-) -Daven

Today I Found Out

If you happen to be looking for a great video to listen to while drifting off to sleep, might I suggest our latest covering all manner of awesome aircraft related topics, like the crazy cool, and expensive, engineering of the B-2 Stealth Bomber. How the SR-71 Blackbird got made and how they made it so insanely fast. How the Wright Brothers won the race to the air. Next up an Incredibly deep dive into the fascinating invention of the helicopter. Can you really legally land a helicopter in a fast food parking lot? Moving on from there, the strange world and incredible engineering of the wingless lifting body aircraft. The long and twisting road to flying cars. The largely forgotten airship disaster that helped end the cruise ships of the sky. And, finally, was Alberto Santos-Dumont the real inventor of the airplane? https://youtu.be/iho6QScqb6w

This is one of the more bizarre stories we've ever covered and previously completely off my radar: https://youtu.be/ur5NsMxFRFk

Today I Found Out

Happy 4th to those of the United States' persuasion who enjoy celebrating traitors to King and Country who also advocated for tax evasion... ;-) If you would like to become the envy of this evening's BBQ talks, admired by your crush, feared by your enemies, capable of dropping interesting little known American Revolution facts like Jason Mendoza can drop a beat, well have we got a documentary for you!

In all seriousness, this is one of the most interesting videos we've ever produced in my opinion, so do check it out if interesting history is your thing: Hancock's Revolution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaBK1... -Daven

Today I Found Out

This one gets super weird, right down to mummifying famed Argentinan Eva PerĂ³n and her surviving husband then keeping her mummy in his and his new wife's dining room for years... as you do... Good conversation starter when guests over for dinner, I suppose... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ur5Ns... -Daven
