There's no single rule, how to determine whether a noun, ending in the soft sign, is feminine or masculine, but there are reliable clues.

✅ Feminine — words with these suffixes:
-ость/-есть: радость (joy), смелость (courage), известность (fame)
-знь: жизнь (life), болезнь (illness)
-ь from verbs ending in -ть: связь (connection, from связать — "to connect"), боль (pain)

✅ Masculine — often:

- month names: январь (January), апрель (April), июль (July)

- words with the suffix -тель: выключатель (switch), учитель

- many everyday/concrete objects: словарь (dictionary), календарь (calendar), портфель (briefcase), руль (steering wheel), корабль (ship)
