If you’ve managed to take a listen to the new track, thank you, and if you’ve gone the extra mile and reached out and message me, it doesn’t go unnoticed. To those who read the mailer I sent out, you have given me confidence to share a little more on here about the track…..
My good friend Ben Lovett, invited me to a sort of retreat in his upstate New York house, a collection of his friends in music, sharing stories, becoming friends and if music was written along the way, then it was a bonus.
Without going into too much detail, we had had a tough year with my husband’s health, and most the year was spent concentrating on him and kids. This trip to NY was the first time I was alone, thinking about music once more, and in all honesty I was scared. Scared of feeling all of what had just passed and we were still going through, and once I got there and sat down at a piano, it felt very overwhelming.
After some much needed tough love from @maggierogersmusic , reminding me that you had to feel things to be able to write, I started to lay down an idea. Enters the room, the super talented @leifvollebekk. I speak out my thoughts to him, “what comes with wild love, wild pain”…. I asked if he understood what I was trying to percolate, he nodded and I found my partner for writing this song with.
It was written and recorded there in New York, my first real experience collaborating with another musician, and I’m so glad I trusted the group I was lucky enough to be sharing a space with.
There’s countless people to mention. All in all, I can safely say this song wouldn’t exist if I didn’t have a force of brilliant people, pulling me out of my day to day life of trying to feel as little as possible. Their persuasion and guidance showed me that it was worth feeling again and that I still loved to make music. And I still want to continue to write songs.
Really excited to be starting the year with a brand new track, ‘Scared Of Loving Wild Again’. And who better to unveil it than Lauren Laverne! Tune in tomorrow from 10am on BBC 6Music.
I am so happy to announce my new single Scared of Loving Wild Again will be out next week 14th January.
This marks the start of a new chapter for me, working more independently outside of the traditional label setup.
It’s a bit more organic so I’d be lying if I hadn’t had some nervous moments. But I’m mainly very excited to be feeling this out autonomously.. And mostly, for you to hear this track.
My favourite part about this has always been performing and meeting you all. Thank you so much to Corona Capital for having me last weekend - the crowd and the crew were beautiful and I felt so looked after. Home now with my two biggest fans (most of the time)! Felt like a special few days…. Grounding me now and in what’s ahead.
Today is the anniversary of the tragic passing of Sarah Hegazy. Sarah was a 30-year-old Egyptian queer feminist whose resistance centred around a deconstruction of class power and struggle, she took her own life whilst in exile in Canada.
Three years previously, Sarah Hegazy was arrested, tortured and subjected to sexual assault in prison for 3 months for waving a rainbow flag at a concert in Cairo. She had talked about how her time in prison affected her mental health.
I wrote this song ‘Dusty Frames’ inspired by Sarah and recorded this live performance at Florence Road Cafe in Brighton which I’m sharing with you today to bring awareness to her story.
I headed back to Black Barn Studios where I recorded the album, to do a live session with my extraordinary band. ‘Sail Away’ is an important track to me, I explored my interest in spirituality, looking outwards not inwards, believing there was a way through the dark times, and the chorus is really about my son Otis, and how he helped me get to the other side. Through pain, I grew as a person, and found something that was long missing, a belief in something greater than my own existence.
