Why is salt used on roads in the winter🤔?
The main reason is it's ability to lower the freezing point of water.
Here's how it works:
1. Lowering Freezing Point:
When salt is applied to ice or snow, it dissolves in the thin layer of liquid water that is created on the surface. The dissolved salt lowers the freezing point of water, preventing the formation of ice.
2. Formation of Brine:
The salt creates a brine solution, which has a lower freezing point than regular water. This brine can exist at temperatures below the freezing point of pure water, preventing the re-freezing of the melted ice.
3. Accelerating Melting:
Salt also works by accelerating the melting process. The presence of salt in the ice or snow lowers the overall freezing point of the mixture, causing it to melt even at temperatures below the normal freezing point.
