Some examples:
- I want good insights from my systems
- I don’t want a siloed experience
- My inventory is off. Get it right



Do you see the issues with them?

Yes, they don’t follow the SMART framework.



S = Specific, M = Measurable, A = Attainable, R = Realistic, T = Timely.


Let’s analyze each.


𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬.
- Is it specific? Probably not.
- Measurable? What are you measuring here again?
- Attainable? When you can’t define the finish line, you won’t ever finish.
- Realistic? What’s good again?
- Timely? I will get to it when I can.


𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞.
- What’s siloed experience?
- How do you define that?


𝐌𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟. 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.
- Inventory is off by how much?
- What’s causing it?
- What are the metrics that are leading you to believe that your inventory is off?
- Where are these metrics right now?
- What’s the cost of improving them?
- Do you have a budget to get it right?

𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐓.



When it comes to expectations of success from digital transformation initiatives, it’s garbage in, garbage out.


So make sure you are not feeding garbage to your project and expecting wonders.
