Passengers of Lion Air flight JT 330 cried as the engine caught fire
JAKARTA - A viral video clip shows the moment Lion Air JT 330 caught fire immediately after taking off from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, yesterday, with footage showing the anxious state of passengers in the cabin, Berita Hits news site reported today.
The footage shows the situation of passengers with many crying when the plane was at a height of 914 meters in the air.
According to reports, after about 15 minutes of flying in the air, the plane carrying six crew and 169 passengers suddenly let out a loud explosion followed by sparks that burned its left engine.
"The situation inside the plane became too hot," according to the description on the video shared on the TikTok application.
The video also shows the situation in the cabin becoming dark and followed by the sound of panicked female passengers crying.
"There were already many women on the plane who were crying because of panic, but I didn't have time to record because I was also panicking," said the recorder.
The plane from Jakarta to Palembang was however lucky because it managed to turn back to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
The cries also turned into shouts of gratitude as soon as it landed safely, with passengers giving the pilot a standing ovation.
"Thank you to the pilot who managed to land the plane safely even though it skidded after landing," said the individual.
Meanwhile, Lion Air's Strategic Corporate Communications officer, Danang Mandala Prihantoro said in a press release that the JT 330 aircraft was in good condition when it was checked before take off.
However, when it was at an altitude of 914 meters, the pilot could sense that the performance of one of the plane's engine components was problematic and needed to be checked as soon as possible.
"For safety reasons, the pilot decided to return to the airport in Jakarta," he said.
An investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted. – Agency

Cathay Pacific A350 returns to Manchester after gear retraction problem
A Cathay Pacific A350 made an emergency landing at Manchester airport (MAN) in the United Kingdom on August 23, 2022, after a gear retraction problem.
The aircraft, registration B-LXN, departed Manchester at 1300 local time (1200 UTC) for a flight to Hong Kong (HKG), but the pilots reported problems retracting the gear after take-off and elected to return to the airport for an emergency landing.
