PRASA’s Celebrity Campaign vs. the Reality on the Ground: Commuters Still Waiting for Real Service

In recent months, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has launched an energetic public relations push, showcasing celebrities and influencers to rebuild its image. Slick videos, glossy billboards, and high-profile endorsements paint a picture of a vibrant, modern railway service rising from the ashes of lockdown vandalism.

But for millions of ordinary South Africans—especially the working poor—the reality looks very different.

Stations Rebuilt, but Still Closed

After the widespread vandalism and theft that occurred during the COVID-19 lockdown, PRASA spent millions repairing lines, platforms, power cables, and stations. Communities saw construction teams, new fencing, and promises that trains would soon return.

Yet today, many of those same stations remain closed. Some are locked behind new gates. Others are ghostly, with refurbished buildings but no staff, no trains, and no announcements. The infrastructure looks ready, but the service is not.

A System That Looks Good on Paper — But Doesn’t Move People

Instead of restoring full service, PRASA seems to be focusing more on marketing than mobility. The contrast is glaring:

Influencers are being paid, while commuters still walk long distances or pay high taxi fares just to get to work.

Stations look renovated, but daily operations remain inconsistent or completely absent.

Campaigns celebrate progress, but workers are standing at empty platforms waiting for trains that never come.

For people who rely on trains—the domestic workers, security guards, retail assistants, students—this is more than an inconvenience. It’s an economic burden.

The Poor Are Carrying the Cost

Commuters who once paid R7 for a train trip now spend R20–R40 on taxis every day. Over a month, that difference can wipe out hundreds of rand from an already tight household budget. For families living from paycheck to paycheck, this is not a small issue—it’s survival.

Many of these commuters watched their stations being rebuilt with hope, believing that life would get easier again. Instead, the stations sit there like abandoned monuments to broken promises.

Where Is Accountability?

The question many South Africans are asking is simple:
Why spend money on campaigns when the core service still isn’t working?

Marketing will not fix the railways. Celebrities will not run trains. PRASA cannot celebrate progress while communities continue to suffer. The agency was created to provide affordable, reliable transport—not to trend on social media.

A Call for Real Priorities

South Africa does not need more commercials.
It needs trains that run, stations that open, and a system that puts commuters—especially the poor—at the center of every decision.

Until PRASA shifts its focus from image to impact, the public will continue to feel abandoned, watching shiny campaigns while they struggle to get from home to work every day.
