Very fun directing this video for In This World from a distance - starring musician / artist Talula Gelb and filmed (and cameo!) by the very luminous Howe Gelb...Talula channeled the character of this song in the midst of a very rare snow flurry in the barrio of Tucson... The essence of this song for me is "push and pull". The push of the hyperspeed at which we are all receiving information. The pull of this incredible energy I get from feeling like I would do anything in this world for the ones I love...
today i am officially diving in to Patreon world... Patreon is a direct to artist monthly membership platform that i hope will be a creative exchange beyond the buzz of social media and album releases where i will be offering friends and fans bits and pieces that may not travel beyond Patreon...poems, notes, drawings, photos (i love taking photos as many of you may know), videos, and kitchen demos for new songs, works in progress...and other fragments that go into the songs that make up the albums that become shows that became the road that has all become a way of life now!?... for me these other creative explorations feed the music and help keep my mind open which i find to be such a big part of it all...
if we're lucky it will be a bit of an open exchange (i'll be taking surveys! haha)... i've felt very shy to try using Patreon, but a few artists and musicians i love have encouraged me to try it as a way of connecting our further...and as most of you know i like exploring the artistic and musical underground...
and i like making up the rules as i go…or not making any rules at all! and as challenging and disorienting and extreme as a lot of things have been, it's feeling important to stay connected in multiple places, and to try to adapt to some of these new ways of connecting...so, here's to another new beginning!
whether you have been a friend or fan since the earliest notes, or you’ve somehow just connected in lately, i hope you will join me in this new experiment…and if you know anyone that you think might be interested in the excursion, please know that every single mention and share and passing on of the songs and all really does help! thank you for considering!
i hope you all are holding steady out there...
wishing everyone a great week and thanksgiving holiday if you're celebrating!
we survived...i know we're all feeling this and wondering exactly how... JT Bates and i have released another experimental distance collaboration called Sunday (on Righteous Babe Records) : featuring CARM 🙌...and with Jeremy Ylvisaker ⚡️and Chris Bates 💛 in the mix, too...
I'm delighted to send out this experimental piece I made with my musical brother-in-arms JT Bates today. 🥳 Watch the video choreographed and performed by the mesmerizing Veronica Tundis 🤩
Thank you to Righteous Babe Records for the ongoing support and to Alex Proctor for the mix and Huntley Miller for the master. And a special thanks to Mary Hickson for connecting me with Veronica Tundis.
We made "Is / Was" out of musical fragments, across space and time. For me, music, memory and dreams make the world more coherent. One day when I was feeling extra isolated during the heart of the pandemic I sent some fragmented guitar recordings (Guild Starfire ❤️) to JT. We played some musical ping pong with the fragments: adding, taking away, exchanging…and then all of a sudden we had a coherent piece. It had a beginning and an end. When I heard the instrumental track I flashed on a song I had written one night in Paris in an apartment that had a blue door and was 59 stairs up. Why did I count the stairs? Why did I flash on this song when I heard our track? I sang what I could remember of the momentary Paris song about hope, and somehow it all connected and became "Is / Was." (original fragment title: Is Was Galaxy)
To connect even further out, I sent "Is / Was" to choreographer/dancer Veronica Tundis (Rome, Italy) and she responded with a mesmerizing and perfect dance that she said was about "a person lost in memories in a place that doesn’t fit the memories she’s lost in." 💞
Thank you friends and fans for all the support! Wish I could see you all in one place right now! More noise soon ⚡️
