"When I was a kid sitting beside my dad in the deer woods, my imagination never sat still. We would sit on the same log year after year and I could barely contain myself. I would whisper wild possibilities. Dad, what if a giant twelve-pointer bigger than anything anyone has ever seen just walked out right now? He would give me a gentle shush, we would sit in silence for thirty seconds, and then I was right back at it with another idea.

I loved talking to him while we hunted, even if he preferred the quiet. I didn’t care. I would ask him about animals, about tracks, about what he would do if a big old buck from the pages of Field & Stream stepped off the paper and onto the deer trail right in front of us.

To this day, that imagination has never left me. Every hunt. Every hour in the woods. I can always picture something about to happen.

A few weeks ago during gun season I was waiting on the wind to switch so I could still hunt one of my favorite bedding areas. My mind started to run again. What if a pot-bellied old buck was already headed my way?

Turns out, he was.

I slipped into the river bottom and caught a glimpse of him working down a hillside toward the water, stopping to work a line of rubs. No trail cameras. No food plot. No blind. Just a walk in the woods with a muzzleloader in hand, a deer tag in my pocket, and that same imagination I had as a kid, more convinced than ever that the woods might offer something unforgettable."
