Whatever else is happening in our personal lives and in the world around us, of one thing we can be supremely confident.
The omniscient and most holy God is not unaware nor indifferent to the evil which He abominates in His Word.
Stated positively, the omnipotent and most loving God is with His people and will guide them safely into His heavenly kingdom.
Christ most certainly did not come, live, die, rise again, and ascend into heaven only to see His sovereign purpose of grace thwarted by the designs of passing men.
That means, regardless of present circumstances, our trust in our Redeemer could never be in vain. We shall overcome through Him who loves us.
On, then, dear Christian.
In God’s name, go on.
“I fear no evil, for You are with me” (Psalm 23:4).

Five Brief Books You Can Actually Read (and Should)
Several people in recent days have been asking me for book recommendations. With this post, your obedient servant responds. But first a word of context.
These books are short. Several can be read in one day. So this list is for ordinary, sincere Christians who have trouble reading long books. I’m not giving a seminarian his semester assignments or showing off for my fellow pastors here.
These books are my books. They (or their authors) have been personally valuable.
These books are not exhaustive. There are other great books and authors. I’m just trying to get you started.
These books introduce you to authors whose other works you can safely read.
Without further ado, and in reverse order:
5. Church History 101: The Highlights of Twenty
Centuries (Sinclair Ferguson and others; 99 pp.)
Church history and historical theology are grossly neglected by most Christians. Too bad. It’s fascinating and edifying. This little handbook will get you started.
4. The Cross: The Pulpit of God’s Love (Iain Murray; 40 pages).
Iain Murray is without question one of the most valuable Christian writers of the past century. I recently set aside a few months to read books only by him. Think of this booklet as a Costco sample that will make you want more.
3. The Reformed Faith (Loraine Boettner; 28 pages)
Has the sovereignty of God in salvation ever been more ably defended in such a condensed format?
2. Only Jesus (John MacArthur; 173 pages)
This is an abridgement of John’s classic The Gospel According to Jesus. What did Jesus mean when He said, “Follow Me”?
1. From Fear to Faith (Martyn Lloyd-Jones; 78 pages)
Don’t get me started on why this book gets top billing. Decades ago it changed my life. It prepared me for a ministry of preaching more than any other single book. Every Christian needs to turn off the cell phone and read it thoughtfully.

Life inevitably comes with all manner of adversity of various shapes, sizes, and sources. Our pilgrimage is through a fallen world which lies in the power of the evil one, after all (1 John 5:19).
Dear Christian, rather than seeking escape or playing the victim, look instead to Christ who has overcome this world (John 16:33) and conquered the grave (1 Cor. 15:20). We are more than conquerors by virtue of our union with Christ (Romans 8:37-39).
The following words of hope and heavenly perspective help me on an ongoing basis, and they are the birthright of all who have been born of the Spirit in Christ:
“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day byday.
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
(2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

Christian, this world is not our home, nor is it our hope and help. The Christ of Scripture is.
That is the only perspective that will help you truly live in it.
"How blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God" (Psalm 146:5).
"You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end" (Matthew 24:6).
"These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).
"For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come" (Hebrews 13:14).

A word from our pastor...
Assorted fallacies that uninformed and undiscerning people believe when they leave their outward association with biblical truth for the Catholic Church, in no particular order:
1. That the early church fathers are reliable teachers due to their proximity to the apostles.
2. That the early church worshipped like the Catholic Church does today.
3. That there is an unbroken and undisputed line of succession from the apostles to the Pope today.
4. That church unity means there should be one and only one external religious organization ruling over professing Christians throughout the world.
5. That a parallel line of oral tradition was handed down from the apostles with equal authority to the written Word of God.
6. That the early church always recognized a supreme pontiff seated in Rome.
7. That Peter was the first Pope.
8. That Catholic apologists are truthful.
9. That individual Catholics can speak on behalf of the church when they contradict formal church doctrine.
Friends, for a more systematic refutation of Roman Catholicism, please see my series “The Bible and Roman Catholicism” (links to come in the comments). I meticulously cite official Catholic documents on matters such as the mass, tradition, the Pope, Mary, purgatory, and salvation, then refute it all over the course of about ten messages.
I need to put it all in a book. I don’t know if the Lord will grant me the time and grace to do so. But the content is out there in audio and video format.
And to those who have accused me of misrepresentation and disputed this material in the past: I stand 100% behind every point and assertion I made when I taught this material nearly 10 years ago, so help me God.

A word from our pastor...
I could write a book about this. Indeed, I have one started and need much grace to one day finish it. But this post is deliberately brief, just enough to raise a supportive voice for many who suffer in silence.
When I started down the path that led to ministry, I had no idea that I would encounter so many friends and families dealing with the profound pain of adult children who have rejected them.
I welcome those interactions. Heaven knows such grief needs a release to a sympathetic ear.
These dear friends. Years of unanswered cards, calls, and texts. Years of the unanswerable question, “Was it something I have done?” Years of standing at the side of the road, looking in the distance for some sign of the return of the prodigal. Years of groaning, sighing prayers.
But nothing.
Radio silence while unrecoverable years pass.
They have stopped crying because the well of tears has run dry.
I am told that the late Voddie Baucham used to say, “There ain’t no pain like kid pain.” He was right.
That these situations contradict the moral order of God is plain and beyond question. “Honor your father and mother” (Exodus 20:12).
Were the parents perfect? No, of course not.
Are there children who have been hurt by genuinely abusive parents? Yes. But that does not explain this. It does not explain loving, sacrificial parents being coldly set aside.
I have no human solution. But my Lord tells one and all, “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28). My impotence to comfort is not the measure of His. The love of crucified blood has a power to help every heavy heart.
I cannot promise you, my dear friends, that you will find relief this side of heaven. Many sorrows are carried to the grave.
But I can promise you that Christ will keep His promise to dry every tear when you see Him face to face. You may carry those sorrows to the grave, but for the Christian, they won’t follow you out of it.
Trust in Christ, and somehow all will be well.
Trust in Christ, and somehow you will one day find that He has faithfully worked all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
In the meantime, my arm is around your shoulder as I ask the Lord to comfort you even now.
