What game should Felicia and Adan play on Tuesday? Note: We reserve the right to make our decision despite the votes :P

Which game should I play next on Thursdays?
Note: The Legend of Zelda will most likely be played on the Switch, and will continue with subsequent Zelda games in release order, similar to my Mario, X-Men, and Castlevania streams (until the Oracle games or as long as we all don't get bored of it, whichever comes first :P )

Since a fair number of people are asking about the game I’m making, I thought I’d write a post about it.

I decided not to write a story for #NaNoWriMo this year (because it’s something I already do fairly regularly) and instead start making the game I’ve had in my head for at least a year. I am certain I will not finish this process by the end of November because that would require me to not have a day-job and also not be doing so many things for the #SingaporeWritersFest (oh yeah, I’m doing a bunch of stuff for #SWF this month too). But like regular participants of NaNoWriMo, I promised myself I would do at least one thing related to #gamedev every day in November.

My game is about traversing various underworlds to rescue a loved one. Mechanically, this will be a #Metroidvania, a genre of non-linear games focused on exploration with progression gated behind upgrades and power-ups, and so-called because of the two progenitors of the genre: #Metroid and #Castlevania II. It’s my favorite game genre, and I’ve decided to dress up my game in another thing I love: #mythology. The map in this game will consist of multiple underworlds from various mythologies from around the world and across history. Early contenders include Mictlān, Tartarus, the Duat, and Dìyù.

My game dev journey is currently two-pronged: research and creation. These two categories can be further split: research includes learning more about Metroidvanias by playing and re-playing games in the genre (like Super Metroid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Hollow Knight, Guacamelee, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Ghost Song, Ender Lilies, and more) and re-watching GMTK’s extremely informative Boss Keys videos (youtube.com/playlist?list=PLc38fcMFcV_ul4D6OChdWhs…, learning more about various underworlds by reading various mythological texts (that I thankfully already own), and learning more about actually making games by learning how to use the #NESmaker software (www.thenew8bitheroes.com/) and reading various texts on the subject.

Creation of course includes creating the actual game as well as writing the story of the game. Who is our hero? Who is the loved one they have to rescue? Why have they been taken? Why does our hero have to traverse all these underworlds? What mythological beings will stand in their way?

Likely the most fun aspect of this will be figuring out how to turn the underworlds into game spaces: what kinds of enemies will each underworld have? what upgrade or upgrades make the most sense to include in each underworld? who will be the final boss in each underworld, and how will they behave in terms of mechanics? is including the ten Yama kings as the bosses of Dìyù too much? should I instead make it the singular Yama, but one of his powers is to split into ten different aspects for short periods of time? Hey, that’s a pretty good idea.

I am very excited about this project. Not just because it’s something new and exciting that I’ve never done before, but becauseh it leverages on things I not only know fairly well, but actively love.
