Finally read the first 12 issues of Ultimate X-Men by Peach Momoko. I previously fell off somewhere around issue 3.
This is definitely the black sheep of the Ultimate Universe, as it’s the MOST different from its 616 counterparts. Instead of familiar characters with differing backstories, we’re getting brand new characters with somewhat familiar power sets amid a complete reimagining of what mutant life is really like. Kids developing horrifying powers in middle school. Unknown forces haunting them, and a growing conspiracy increasing anti-mutant sentiments from multiple angles.
It reads like a YA horror manga, and there are some tough themes/imagery here regarding suicide, abandonment and overall teen angst. It doesn’t start showing its ties to the greater ultimate universe until late in volume 2. Honestly, it’s probably best enjoyed as a standalone.
Due to an uptick in fraudulent activity, I've made the decision to remove all products from my self-hosted merch shop. From now on, I'll sell merch in limited capsules, perhaps 2 or 3 times per year. The first limited drop will be for our 5th channel anniversary this November.
Note: This doesn't affect the items that show up under each video, as those come from a third party provider. Feel free to grab those if you so desire. Thanks so much for your support!
Apparently this is going for $40+ on eBay, on the day of release! This is why I urge everyone… PRE-ORDER your comics! I was able to get this with no hassle. It was sitting behind the counter, in a box with my name on it because I ordered it months ago. Love this art by Daniel Warren Johnson.
Did you read The Amazing Spider-Man #1 by Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz and JRJR yet? If so, leave your [spoiler free] thoughts down in the comments? My opinion? It was a solid start, but may have lost me with the last 3 pages. LOVED the Larraz art though!
With a newborn AND a toddler in the house, it's been hard to find a time when the house is quiet enough to record videos and I'm not a zombie due to lack of sleep. But I've been reading a ton lately, and most of my reviews get typed up in my weekly newsletters. You can read and subscribe at thisweekincomics.com/
The long awaited return of Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee was… okay I guess? Hush is back in town, and he really wants Batman to notice. Batman notices and tells us with his internal monologue. And that’s kinda it.
The art is Jim Lee, but not like Jim Lee on all cylinders. More like the Jim Lee you know from DC Variant covers. I was hoping we’d get the Jim Lee from All Star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder. I’ve been trying to put a finger on what didn’t work for me. It’s somewhere between the colors and the lack of detail in the backgrounds.
Perhaps the best part of this issue was the free Ashcan Preview of next month’s issue. I hope it lives up the line art.

Well crafted, but not for everyone.
