City of San Leandro

One of the most diverse cities in the nation located at the center of the dynamic San Francisco Bay Area, San Leandro is a safe, vibrant community of 87,000 residents with well-maintained neighborhoods, excellent public libraries, twenty-one public parks, quality local schools, and a wide range of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. The western border of the city consists of over eight miles of pristine shoreline and amenities on San Francisco Bay while a regional park and nature areas fall on the eastern border. San Leandro businesses enjoy multiple advantages including close proximity to the Oakland International Airport and Port of Oakland, two major freeways, two BART stations, and access to a large and well-educated workforce. Through a public-private partnership known as Lit San Leandro (www.LitSanLeandro.com), a fiber optic network encircles San Leandro’s industrial and commercial core offering businesses virtually unlimited internet connectivity.

Everyone Home is seeking compassionate community members to volunteer for the 2026 Point-In-Time (PIT) Homeless Count in Alameda County. This one-day effort plays a critical role in understanding and ultimately ending homelessness in our community.

By volunteering, you will help gather a snapshot of people experiencing homelessness—both those staying in shelters and those living unsheltered in places like vehicles, parks, and streets. Your participation ensures that every person is counted and that their needs are represented.

Why Volunteer?

Make a real impact in efforts to end homelessness

Help raise awareness and understanding of the challenges people face

Listen to personal stories and connect individuals to community resources

Demonstrate care by distributing basic items such as hats, socks, gloves, and toiletries

What Volunteers Will Do

Work in small teams to conduct brief, respectful surveys

Collect important information that helps improve housing and support services

Choose preferred geographic areas and, if desired, sign up with friends or as a group

No prior experience is needed. Training, resources, and FAQs will be provided before the count to ensure you feel prepared and supported.

✨ Your time matters. Your compassion matters. Join us and help ensure that every individual experiencing homelessness counts.

Library Staff Receive Fire Safety & Hands-Only CPR Training

This month, Library staff received fire extinguisher and hands-only CPR training from the Alameda County Fire Department (ACFD). This hands-on training strengthens staff readiness for real-life emergencies and reflects the strong partnership between the City of San Leandro and ACFD.

For residents, this means the Library is not only a place to explore books and programs, it’s also staffed by team members who are better prepared to respond during critical moments. Whether assisting a patron in need or helping during an unexpected incident, our Library staff are building skills that support a safer, more resilient community.

Thank you to ACFD for providing this valuable training and for helping us keep our public spaces safe.

On Saturday, November 15, Homegrown Habitats San Leandro hosted “Fall Planting 101” at the Manor Branch Library, in partnership with the City of San Leandro’s Resilience Network. Nearly 30 residents joined this hands-on, pop-up–style workshop focused on gardening with California native plants, complete with a giveaway of native plant starts and seeds.
Guests explored info tables on the ecological value of native plants, tips for sheet-mulching and lawn removal, garden design basics, choosing the right native species, and techniques for growing plants from seed.
Participants left inspired, taking home native plant starts and more than 20 varieties of seeds harvested from members’ own gardens. With photo guides, plant information, and “shopping lists” to help choose their favorites, guests selected seeds at the outdoor “seed store” on the library patio—also home to Homegrown Habitats’ container demo garden.
The event was a resounding success, full of positive energy, great conversations, and new community connections.

On Saturday, November 8, Resilience Network member Friends of the San Leandro Creek hosted a “Creek Restoration Day” at Chabot Park, in partnership with the City of San Leandro. The three-hour event drew 75 volunteers who helped reintroduce 70 native plants — including 13 different species — to their natural habitat in the San Leandro Creek.
We’d like to give a special shout-out to volunteers from EarthTeam, Bishop O’Dowd, and all the community members who rolled up their sleeves and made this happen!
