Over the summer of my first year in university, I wrote a research paper trying to figure out this one type of music I hate, hoping that it would make me hate it less. Spoiler alert: it didn't. I just have even more convoluted feelings about it now.

Anyway, one year and a half later, I've been given the opportunity to reuse some of my old ideas and add in some much-needed reflection to write a paper for COLORSxSTUDIOS in collaboration with Goethe Institute. It's by no means the final form of my research on this topic - those who know me know I have quite the history with trying to improve this paper - but it's definitely a nice reminder of how much this music means to the people who enjoy it, who also happen to mean a lot to me.

I would like to give my biggest thanks to anh Tiến Nguyễn for giving me this opportunity, Long Nguyễn and Uyên Uyên for carrying the visual components, my father and the interviewees for their incredible insight, the team at COLORS and Goethe for their support, and one last thank you to two certain individuals, unnamed here, for being there from the very beginning of my downward spiral into nhạc vàng and Bolero.
