π―οΈ Today in History: The Execution of Barth Owoh β A Painful Nigerian Memory
On April 10, 1985, Nigeria witnessed one of the most controversial and heartbreaking executions in its history. Three young men β Bartholomew Owoh (26), Bernard Ogedengbe (29), and Lawal Ojuolape (30) β were executed by firing squad at the Kirikiri shooting range in Lagos under the military regime of General Muhammadu Buhari.
What made this execution deeply tragic was not just the method, but the circumstances surrounding it. The three men were convicted of drug-related offences, but here's the twist β they committed the offence before Buhari came into power and before the decree prescribing death penalty for such offences was signed into law.
Yes, the law was applied retroactively β a move that sparked nationwide outrage and international criticism. One of the executed, Bartholomew Owoh, was reportedly just 26 years old and had no history of violence β merely caught in a situation that spiraled out of control.
To add to the emotion, emerging reports claim that Bartholomew Owoh was the elder brother of Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia. According to a source close to the family, the actor and his loved ones have never truly recovered from the trauma of that execution. It was a wound that ran deep β not just for them, but for an entire generation of Nigerians.
This moment in Nigerian history is a reminder of the painful price of military rule, harsh justice, and the dangers of retroactive law. Itβs a sobering chapter that still stirs debate today.

During this period, traffic along this stretch will be limited to a single lane.
We advise motorists to take extra precautions while using the road, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by this temporary disruption.
