Years ago, I heard a famous hindi actor, Shah Rukh Khan, say something that stayed with me, and although I don’t remember his exact words anymore, I remember the message because it was about not being here to compete with anyone else. Something about that connected with me immediately, and over the years I kept repeating it, thinking about it, living by it, and eventually I made it my own:

“I am not here to compete. I am not here to compare. I am here to rule my reality.”

I have repeated this affirmation for years, and I wanted to share what it really means to me because my relationship with comparison has always been a little different. When I saw someone succeeding, making money, traveling, building something beautiful, finding love, creating a life they were proud of, or experiencing something I wanted for myself, I never really looked at them and thought, Why do they have that and I don’t? Instead, I would look at them and think, If they can have that, then maybe I can have it too.

Their success became proof to me that something was possible.

I never felt like another person having more meant there was less available for me, because I have always believed that someone else’s success does not take anything away from what I can create in my own life. If anything, seeing someone do something extraordinary made me think bigger about my own possibilities, because now I could see with my own eyes that someone had found a way to do it.

That is what “I am not here to compete” means to me. I don’t need to take someone else’s place to create a place for myself, and I don’t need another person to lose in order for me to win. Your success does not threaten mine, your happiness does not take away from mine, your abundance does not mean there is less abundance available for me, and your light does not make my own light any smaller.

When I say “I am not here to compare,” I am reminding myself that someone else’s life is not the measuring stick for mine. I can admire what another person has created without making myself feel bad about where I am today, because I know that where I am today is simply one part of my story, and there is still so much more that can happen.

There's such a big difference between looking at someone and thinking, Why them and not me? and looking at someone and thinking, Wow, if that is possible for them, what could be possible for me?

I have always loved that second way of looking at life because suddenly you are not surrounded by people you have to compete with... you are surrounded by examples of possibility. You can learn from people, celebrate them, be inspired by them, and allow what they have created to expand your own idea of what life could look like.

And the part of this affirmation that has always meant the most to me... “I am here to rule my reality.”

For me, ruling my reality does not mean that I believe I can control every single thing that happens in my life, because none of us can control every person, every circumstance, every delay, or every unexpected turn. It means that I get to decide what I believe is possible for me, what I give my energy to, what I continue working toward, and whether I allow what I see around me today to become the limit of what I believe I can have tomorrow.

I can look at my life exactly as it is today and still hold a much bigger vision for where it can go.

I can see something I have never experienced before and allow myself to think, Why couldn’t that happen for me too? Why couldn’t I build that? Why couldn’t I experience that? Why couldn’t I become that version of myself?

Not from a place of feeling like life owes me something, but from a place of being open to possibility.

Because when you really think about your own life, there are probably things you have today that you once did not have, places you have been that you once only imagined visiting, things you know today that you once had no idea how to do, and versions of yourself you have already become that an earlier version of you would barely recognize.

So why would we suddenly decide that we have reached the end of what is possible for us?

I believe the things we repeatedly tell ourselves matter, because when you keep telling yourself that something could never happen for you, eventually you may stop noticing the opportunities that could lead you toward it. But when you allow yourself to believe, Maybe this is possible for me too, you begin showing up differently, making different choices, noticing different opportunities, taking chances you may have been afraid to take before, and slowly creating a life that once existed only in your imagination.

That is why this affirmation has stayed with me for so many years. It reminds me that I can watch someone else win and genuinely celebrate them because their win does not take anything away from me. Sometimes another person’s success can actually be the reminder we need that there is so much more available in this life than what we can currently see from where we are standing.

So the next time you see someone living something you would love to experience, maybe instead of comparing your life to theirs, allow yourself to be inspired by what you are seeing. Let it remind you that another human being found a way to create something beautiful, and then bring your attention back to your own life and ask yourself what could become possible if you truly believed you could create something beautiful too.

You are not here to become them, beat them, or live their life. You are here to discover what is possible with your life. So I will keep repeating the words that have followed me for all these years:

I am not here to compete. I am not here to compare. I am here to rule my reality.

And whenever I see someone doing something incredible, I can celebrate them, allow their success to inspire me, and quietly remind myself, if it is possible in this world, then I am allowed to believe that something incredible is possible for me too.

Sacred Knowledge Tarot

Hey my beautiful friends, I saw a post like this on Instagram and laughed so hard that I knew I had to make my own versions. Yes, there’s a little cussing in them, but it’s all in fun, because underneath these silly childhood stories are some really big life lessons, and I think some of us need these reminders more than we realize, especially if you have been feeling stuck, questioning yourself or waiting for the moment when you finally feel ready to do something you have been thinking about for a long time.

Sometimes we get stuck because we think we need to know exactly what we are doing before we begin, and we want some kind of proof that everything is going to work before we put our time, energy or heart into it. We want to feel confident first, we want other people to understand what we are doing, we want someone to tell us we are making the right decision, and most of all, we want some kind of guarantee that we aren’t going to fail, embarrass ourselves or look back and wonder why we ever tried.

But life usually doesn’t give us that kind of guarantee.

Jack planted the beans before he had any proof that something was going to grow. The Itsy Bitsy Spider got knocked all the way back down and climbed right back up. Goldilocks kept trying because she knew when something didn’t feel right for her. The Three Little Pigs stopped wasting their energy on the wolf and built something stronger. And Mary apparently just showed up to school with the damn lamb because sometimes you just have to own who you are and stop worrying about whether everybody else thinks it’s weird.

It sounds silly when you put it that way, but there is something really important underneath all of these stories, because you are allowed to begin without knowing exactly how everything is going to work out.

You are allowed to change your mind when something doesn’t feel right anymore. You are allowed to try something and discover that you aren’t very good at it yet. You are allowed to fail, learn something, make adjustments and try again. You are allowed to have standards that other people don’t understand, and you are allowed to walk away from people or situations where you constantly feel like you have to prove your worth. You are also allowed to want a completely different life from the one you are living right now, even if you have absolutely no idea yet how you are going to create it.

And I know how scary that can feel because I have lived it myself.

When I started YouTube, I had never done anything like this before, and I definitely wasn’t sitting there completely confident and thinking, “Oh yeah, I know exactly what I’m doing and I know exactly where this is going.” There were moments when it was scary, there were moments when it was stressful, and there were plenty of moments when I was sitting there thinking, “What the f*ck am I even doing? Is this working? Am I doing this right? Is anybody going to watch this? What if this goes nowhere? What if I’m wasting my time? What if I’m just not good enough at this?”

Those thoughts were there.

The fear was there.

The uncertainty was there.

And I think that part is important to talk about because sometimes we look at someone after something has worked out for them and assume that they must have known what they were doing from the beginning, when the truth is that most people are figuring things out while they are doing them.

I didn’t wait for all of those thoughts to disappear before I kept going, because eventually I realized that having those thoughts didn’t mean I had to listen to them.

You can be scared and still take the next step. You can question yourself and still keep going. You can wonder whether something is working and still give it more time. You can have absolutely no idea what the f*ck you are doing and still learn along the way.

That is how I learned.

I kept pressing record, and then I learned the next thing I needed to learn, and then the next thing, and then the next thing. I made mistakes, I changed things, I tried things that worked and plenty of things that didn’t, and slowly I became better because I was actually doing it instead of waiting until I somehow knew everything before I started.

Had I waited until I felt completely ready, I sometimes wonder whether I would have ever started at all.

And maybe someone reading this is standing in that exact place right now.

Maybe there is something inside of you that has been asking you to move, create, leave, begin, apply, speak up, change direction, raise your standards or simply try again, but every time you think about doing it, your mind gives you another reason to wait. Maybe you keep asking yourself whether it will work, whether you are good enough, whether you are too old, whether you waited too long, whether people will judge you, whether you will embarrass yourself, or whether you are going to put your heart into something only to watch it fail.

Those thoughts are normal.

They just don’t have to get in your way.

Sometimes the confidence you are waiting for only comes after you begin. Sometimes the proof you desperately want only appears after you plant the seed. Sometimes you don’t discover how strong, talented, creative or capable you are until life puts you in a position where you finally have to find out.

So maybe you don’t need to see the entire road today, and maybe you don’t need everybody around you to understand where you are going. Maybe you just need enough courage for the next step, and then when you get there, you can figure out the step after that.

Plant the bean. Climb back up. Build the stronger house. Take the lamb to school. 😂

And if you fall somewhere along the way, that doesn’t erase everything you have already done, and it certainly doesn’t mean you failed. It might simply mean that there is another lesson to learn, another way to try or another part of your story that hasn’t been written yet.

So laugh at these posts with me because they are meant to be funny, but also pay attention to whichever one makes you stop for a second and think about your own life, because underneath the joke might be exactly the reminder you needed today.

You don’t have to stop being scared before you start. Sometimes you just have to stop letting scared make all of your decisions.
