WOOD & WIRE by Jessica Rhaye, Bill Preeper, and Sandy MacKay - is OUT NOW! Available on CD / LP + Digital here: ffm.to/woodandwire
It is our pleasure to finally share the entirety of our trio album with you! These songs were recorded in live sessions, with very little overdubbing, at the Capitol Theatre in Oxford, Nova Scotia in the spring of 2022 with our dear friend and producer Dale Murray. We each brought 2 original songs to this project and a special cover of Anna McGarrigle’s song “Goin’ Back to Harlan” that sets the tone for our trio and this album. We hope you enjoy these sweet folk songs and find the same warmth in the music as we did while recording them.
"I Feel More Like I Do Now" is the second video from our PREEPER RHAYE MACKAY presents Songs from Wood & Wire in the Blackberry Room.
This song was inspired by Bill’s dear friend Bea Dwyer, who often asked after serving a bowl of her delicious stew, “Do you feel more like you do now than you did when you came in?” The song was written in the ’70’s by Bill when he was on his own for the first time and uncertain about his future. Finally recorded, after five decades of this tune making the rounds at campfires and kitchens, Bill says it’s been fun to give it a little kick while the lines of the song still remind him of the struggles and joys he faced at that time.
“Stealing Time” is the first video from our PREEPER RHAYE MACKAY presents Songs from Wood & Wire in the Blackberry Room.
Sandy wrote this song one night when he was travelling from Montreal to Guelph Ontario, crossing over at the New Brunswick Quebec border to meet his wife. He crossed over the border a few times, and as he headed back west, he realized time had lost track of him and he had a free hour that time didn’t know about. Stealing Time suggests Prometheus stole the wrong thing from the gods and pays homage to Pete Seeger’s “Talking Blues”. The song builds a musical clock to tell the story of one stolen hour.
"Goin' Back to Harlan" is a special cover from the Kate and Anna McGarrigle catalogue that helps define our trio's origins. The song sets the tone for our album "WOOD & WIRE", drawing on our influences from 60’s folk music like Doc Watson, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie, and John Hartford. The song mentions numerous well-known folk tunes - Shady Grove, The Bells of Rhymney, Hangman's Reel - songs that made us feel like we were part of the experience and invite us into an old-time perspective.
A huge thanks to artist/illustrator Nicole Aline Legault for creating the beautiful, animated music video for Rocky Hills. Nicole’s vision and stunning artwork capture the dark, folkloric spirit of the song, taking us on a dreamy journey to Rocky Hills.
It gives me great pleasure to share with you the music video for Reaching Out To You. This is a song and video I hold dear to my heart. My grandmother was the inspiration for this song - she was such a positive light in my life, and I think of her often. She passed away in 2011 at the age of 87. We filmed the video near my Grandmother's house and where I grew up. It is the dreamiest, most cinematic video Jordan Mattie and I have created together. Huge thanks to my family and Jordan for making my vision for this song a reality. I hope you enjoy!
We had a lot of fun making this one! We set up a bunch of colourful, flashing lights in my rehearsal studio, wore some fun band T-shirts, and danced like no one was watching! 😎
