NBA star Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf played in the NBA from 1990 to 1998. Abdul-Rauf was selected with the third pick in the 1990 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets. Known for his elite ball handling & precise jump shooting, many basketball experts say he was the precursor to current NBA all-star Steph Curry. Before former NFL star Colin Kapernick's courageous protest against police brutality, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf during the NBA 1996 season refused to stand for the national anthem before games stating the U.S. flag was a symbol of oppression & tyranny. On March 12, 1996, the NBA suspended Abdul-Rauf for his refusal to stand costing him $31,707 per missed game. Two days later, Abdul-Rauf worked out a compromise with the league, whereby he would stand during the national anthem but would silently recite his Islamic prayers. In 1998, in the prime of his career, Abdul-Rauf was "blackballed" by the NBA because of his political views. Brother Rauf attempted a comeback in 2000 but was unsuccessful & finished his basketball career overseas.

NBA star Craig Hodges played for the Chicago Bulls from 1988 to 1992 & helped them win two NBA Championships in 1991 & 1992. Hodges also won the three point contest 3 years in a row (1990, 1991, 1992). Hodges was waived by the Bulls after the 1991–92 season due to his outspoken views regarding racism, police brutality & the U.S. government. Craig Hodges never played in the NBA again.
