Riya and her best friend Aeri always texted before sleeping. One Friday night, Aeri sent:
"Goodnight 🌷"
At 11:48 p.m., Riya replied and went to bed.
Around 2:30 a.m., she woke up and checked her phone. Aeri was online.
Riya smiled and texted:
"Why are you awake?"
Aeri replied immediately:
"Can't sleep."
They chatted for almost an hour. Aeri seemed normal, but her messages were short and strange. Before going back to sleep, Riya asked:
"School tomorrow?"
No reply.
The next morning, Riya arrived at school and noticed everyone crying.
Aeri had died in a car accident with her family.
The police estimated the accident had happened around 10:30 p.m. the previous night.
Shaking, Riya opened their chat.
The messages from 2:30 a.m. were still there.
But under Aeri's name, it now read:
Last seen yesterday at 10:27 p.m.
Riya showed the chat to her classmates.
None of the messages she received after midnight appeared on anyone else's phone.
Only hers.
And she never opened that conversation again.
Except sometimes, on sleepless nights, she notices something that makes her stomach drop.
