I'm an adventurer, explorer, filmmaker and author who believes life is better outdoors. The channel documents my adventures and expeditions in the wilderness.
I prefer self-propelled movement. Hike, paddle, ski, snowshoe, claw. Whatever moves me by my own steam. My notable expeditions include a 4000km, 4-season, continuous crossing of Northern Quebec, Labrador & Newfoundland (by canoe/foot), 1000km across Labrador (canoe) and 700km across my home of Newfoundland (foot/packraft).
I fish, forage & hunt. This is camping, survival & bushcraft. Long challenging expeditions & also shorter relaxed tours. My dogs are usually along for the ride. And they carry their own weight.
My mission is to inspire others to utilize, appreciate and respect all nature offers. Maybe even light a fire in some bellies to step a little outside a comfort zone & dare to live a dream.
Honestly, I'm just a simple kinda guy who loves nature.
Witness its beauty and live the outdoor life through my lens.

Folks! Bear was a beauty. She passed winter 2024 while I was away from home for 372 days, tackling Expedition Northeast. Being gone as she was put down was tough. But I pushed on alone across the frozen wilderness, knowing she now watched over me! We had many hearty adventures together!
In winter 2022, I took her to Labrador for 43 days as I prepped for Northeast. The 2.5hr show of that trip will be live on YouTube tomorrow. Please spread the word, it's gonna be great.
Also, I opened a lovely merch store (on my new website):

4 day, 3 night canoe trip with ol dog Dougie last month. A beautiful journey with fine scenery, fishing and wildlife encounters. More proof of a fact I already know - Newfoundland is a land of great, untamed wilderness that soothes the deepest reaches of the human soul. Let's keep it that way!
I filmed the adventure and it will see the light of day when it's ready. Yes you are itching for a new show and all I can say is there's plenty to come. Between recalibrating after the 372 day Expedition Northeast, working on its material and preparing for new expeditions, taking our time is important, folks!
Wishing you safe and exciting adventures,
Justin

My old friend the Abandoned Canoe, still in fine form! She's got a spirit and character all her own. She carried me and Saku 1000km across the wilderness of Labrador and Quebec, spent 4 harsh years tied to a remote tree, bitten and clawed by black bears, and still lives on! If she could only talk, she'd tell a few stories! It was well worth the 8000km drive and 200km canoe trip to retrieve her.
The other day I ripped her down a small stream in Newfoundland. It's invigorating to feel the power of a river push one along! There's nothing like it.
This Esquif Prospecteur canoe was and still is a durable, enjoyable boat to paddle. Perfect for expeditions alone or with a partner. It's 15 feet and weighs 60lbs. A capable, hardy vessel.
Wishing you great adventures this weekend! There's no time like the present to get after it!
More to come,
Justin

@CBCNL Labrador Morning interview about my mushing experience in the White Bear Arm Sled Dog Race. What a rip over the frozen country it was! Grateful to have gotten the opportunity. Big thanks to Dennis Burden for making it possible and showing me the ropes. I'll be back for more! There will be a film soon.

It may still feel like winter for some, but for much of Newfoundland Spring is in full swing! Stringing up a tarp and sprawling for a peaceful day or night by the fire is a delight. The tarp not only protects from the elements, it also reflects heat from the fire to create a comfortable environment beneath. This video demonstrates one way I make camp with a tarp. This setup could work for any season.

The 'hoist' is the ritual as each racer crosses the finish line in Charlottetown Labrador's White Bear Arm Sled Dog Race - what an honor to partake in the event. The Labrador spirit of outdoor life and adventure in the country pulsed through my veins at this time!
Other pictures:
- The seven mushers. Winner Dwayne Russell (far left) has 40 years of experience and about 80 first place finishes!
- A mid-race photo as I approached the island (9km mark) which we horse-shoed around and completed the remaining 9 km back to the finish. One team passes me headed in that direction. As I glided over the icy wilderness I often found myself thinking of the people who mushed across this great land before me to hunt, trap, travel and explore - long before the arrival of the snowmobile or automobile. They lived it for real!
- The owner of the team I mushed Dennis Woodrow Burden and I discuss how the race went. "Not too bad eh Den b'y! One thing's for sure, it's a bit of a colder affair at -33°C when I'm sat on a komatik being pulled by huskies versus pulling a 250lb toboggan myself!" If the race went much longer I would have been up for intervals running with the dogs! Clothing choices, including more wool layers and no removing of them was crucial. I got frostbite on my cheek during the race and Den froze his fingers as we harnessed up the dogs beforehand. The metal clips we unsnapped to remove them from their post were frozen and burned barehands like hot-steel to touch. It was a job that could not be done with gloves!
More pictures to come, plus a film to YouTube (youtube.com/justinbarbournlexplorer).

Getting after new dreams! Here I approach the finish line at last weeks 18km White Bear Arm Sled Dog Race in Charlottetown, Labrador. What an experience! It was my first crack at mushing and I'm hooked.
The conditions were lovely but also came with a degree of challenge. Drifting snow and windchills of -33°C kept everyone sharp, alert and fighting frostbite.
I placed 7th out of seven teams but it was all about getting my feet wet! Some near tangles with other teams (which is common) was barely avoided but not without quick reaction. As we passed two tangled teams early, one of my dogs turned back to investigate. He snagged in my komatik (Inuit sled) which I then jumped off as my other 5 dogs kept in brisk motion. Then I was running the lake like the huskies with my only link to the komatik being the short rope handle wrapped tightly around my wrist! In what seemed like a blur, I unsnarled him, gave a shout to get him on track and lept back onto the komatik like a surfboard which was now speeding away from me as the pups found their stride. What a thrill! After this I settled in nicely and took in the fine scenery as we glided peacefully down the lake.
I admired the skill of those who finished before me and the athleticism that is required by both human and dog to compete in such an event! Congrats to all racers and shoutout to everyone who helped make the race a success. Huskies for working and racing are an important part of Labrador's Indigenous history and it was great to witness the passion of the people (and dogs) who keep tradition alive. These animals were meant to run. In the picture there's one of my huskies in the background - he wanted to keep running that bad he bit the traces off with his razor-sharp teeth and took off like a bullet!
A huge thanks to the legend Dennis Burden for showing me the ropes and allowing me to race his beautiful team. Den has 35 years of experience mushing and has completed and won/placed well in many races - including winning the 1995 Labrador Winter Games sled race. His buddy William Russell (who finished 4th in last weeks race) also passed along valuable advice. Also grateful for Den and his wife Paulette's superb hospitality while I camped near the picturesque wilderness community of Port Hope Simspon. They treated me to some fine meals from the land!
This is just the beginning of my mushing journey...
