We had a deep conversation this week about what Thanksgiving means to us as a couple. We come from two very different histories.

One of us has family that traces back to the Mayflower.

The other has roots in the Indigenous people of this land.

When these stories sit together, the holiday becomes layered, honest, emotional, and sometimes a little complicated.

We talked about how the version of Thanksgiving we learned in school leaves out so much.

There is the reality of colonization and the harm done to Indigenous communities. There is also the reality that some families crossed the ocean because they were desperate to survive.

These truths live side by side in our home and in our DNA.

At the same time, we both grew up experiencing Thanksgiving as a moment of gratitude.

In Spanish it is called accion de gracias, an action of giving thanks.

We love that because it captures what this holiday can be in the present.

A chance to gather, to be present, to appreciate what we have created in our lives, in our work, and in our communities.

Our conversation reminded us that we can hold truth and gratitude at the same time.

We can honor where we come from while choosing connection, understanding, and grace at our own table. 🧡🙏🏽🍂
