Boring piano improvisation

Once upon a time, someone told me that piano improvisation couldn’t be learned. Either you’ve got it, or you don’t. I believed them for a while... until I didn’t. Years later, after a hand injury put an end to my concert pianist ambitions, I ended up alone at a piano, late at night, just playing. I started to improvise. It was slow. It was quiet. No one was listening. And, eventually, I figured out that you can actually learn it. Or at least pretend to.

These days, improvising is my way of getting lost. When I improvise on the piano, time seems to disappear. Mistakes happen, and occasionally something beautiful comes out when I’m not paying attention. This channel is my invitation to you. Come listen to me make mistakes. Or, even better, have a go at improvising yourself.

A New Room, A Small Break
Hey everyone, I'm taking a little break from uploading because I've felt a bit empty creatively. I'll be back when I have something to say again. In the meantime, I'm testing a new workspace. The piano is still a Hellas, but it's not the same model. The whole atmosphere feels different, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing. Here's a photo of my new friend.

Have you ever felt like a new room changes the way you play?

When 20 new subscribers and some very kind comments suddenly appear... 😳
Thank you to all the new subscribers! The goal is still to be the most boring piano improvisation channel on YouTube. Let’s see how that's working out!

I have 98 subscribers!
When I get to 100, I will... well,
I don’t know, probably panic and buy a new hat. Because, you know, nothing says 'Thank you for your support' like a man in a hat wondering why he needs a hat.
But seriously, I might even try playing with both hands this time. Or maybe I’ll just have a drink and think about it.

Improvisation on a Finnish folk song. This was a request from the comments on my previous video ( @sunkenindeaf ) !

Väinämöinen is a central hero in the Kalevala, Finland's national epic. He was a wise, tough guy with magical powers. J.R.R. Tolkien is known to have been deeply influenced by the Kalevala, with Väinämöinen being a major inspiration for the character of Gandalf.

The Finnish folk song 'Vaka Vanha Väinämöinen' (Grand Old Väinämöinen) features a lovely 5/4 time signature.

While I feel more at home with completely free improvisation or music outside my own cultural heritage, this made it even more important to explore this folk song.

Thanks for all the comments I've received! I'm happy to have connected with so many interesting improvisers through YouTube!

Are My Improvisations Real Music?
I've struggled with uncertainty almost my entire life, especially when it comes to playing the piano. Despite improvising for over a decade, I've hesitated to share my piano improvisations, fearing they weren't 'real' music.

Nowadays, I trust my music more and more, and feel that it carries. Last year, I took a leap and started making videos on YouTube, on how to improvise on piano.

To my amazement, I found an incredible community of kindred spirits!

Thank you, each and every one of you, for watching and sharing your thoughts! I feel like we're all connected somehow. This is a great hobby.
Let's keep improvising!
