🇮🇪 Ireland’s Bog Bodies: Secrets Preserved for Thousands of Years 🏺

Did you know that Ireland’s bogs have preserved human bodies for thousands of years? 😮

Bog bodies are the remains of people whose bodies were naturally preserved in peat bogs. The cold, acidic and low-oxygen conditions can preserve skin, hair and even some internal organs.

One famous example is Old Croghan Man, discovered in County Offaly in 2003. Dating to around 362–175 BC, he lived during Ireland’s Iron Age. His remains showed evidence of injuries, and his body was remarkably preserved.

Another is Clonycavan Man, discovered in County Meath in 2003. He also dates to the Iron Age and is known for his distinctive hairstyle, which may have been styled using a plant-based hair product.

But why were these people in the bogs? Archaeologists have suggested several possibilities, including ritual sacrifice, punishment or other circumstances. The exact reasons remain debated.

These incredible discoveries offer a rare glimpse into Ireland’s ancient past, helping researchers learn about the lives, deaths and beliefs of people who lived more than 2,000 years ago.

Captain Robert Nairac (1948–1977)

On 14 May 1977, British Army Captain Robert Nairac was abducted near Dromintee, County Armagh, taken across the border into County Louth, and shot at the age of 29.

Nearly five decades later, the whereabouts of his remains remain unknown.

20 March 1989 — Jonesborough, South Armagh.

On this day, Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Bob Buchanan of the RUC were killed in an ambush on the Edenappa Road near Jonesborough, shortly after returning from a meeting with senior Garda officers in Dundalk.

The killings became one of the most controversial episodes of the Troubles, later giving rise to investigations and the Smithwick Tribunal over allegations surrounding the security information available to the attackers.

Whatever one's politics or background, the deaths remain part of the painful and complex history of South Armagh during the Troubles.

These came from a reliable source and were taken in the aftermath of the Battle of Newry Road.

The images consist of vehicles used during the firefight.
The cab of the flatbed truck.
The flatbed truck where it was stopped inside the farm buildings.
The DShK gun mount and the secondary getaway vehicle in which weapons were offloaded.

This secondary vehicle was stopped on the Tullynavallen Road. The weapons and vehicle were abandoned as IRA members made their escape.
