*NBCS 2026 Changes Everything for Fire Doors in India*

On 30 April 2026, the Bureau of Indian Standards introduced a major regulatory shift by replacing the National Building Code 2016 with the new National Building Construction Standards 2026 (NBCS 2026).

This update significantly changes fire door compliance requirements across India.

The Most Important Change

Under NBCS 2026, Part F, Clause 2.22, every fire door used in an exit pathway must now meet a minimum insulation performance of 30 minutes.

This means:

Uninsulated fire doors (UD) are no longer compliant.

A fire door must now satisfy:

Stability

Integrity

Insulation

Even if a door passes fire resistance and integrity tests, it will not comply unless it also limits heat transfer on the unexposed side.

New Compliance Standard

❌ FD120 UD — No longer acceptable

✅ FD120 PI — Minimum compliant specification

✅ FD120 ID — Recommended for high-risk and sleeping occupancies

Why Insulation Matters

Traditional uninsulated steel fire doors could remain structurally intact during a fire while the non-fire side became dangerously hot.

NBCS 2026 closes this safety gap by ensuring occupants and escape routes remain protected from excessive heat transfer during evacuation and firefighting operations.

Six Mandatory Fire Door Requirements Under NBCS 2026

NBCS 2026 Part F, Clause 2.22 introduces six key compliance requirements:

1. Complete Assembly Certification

A fire door is now defined as a complete tested assembly including:

Door leaf

Frame

Hardware

Seals

Mixing components from different manufacturers may invalidate the fire rating.

2. Intumescent Seals Mandatory

All fire doors must include approved intumescent seals to prevent smoke and flame spread during fire exposure.

3. Self-Closing Requirement

Fire doors must remain self-closing. Hold-open devices are permitted only when connected to the fire alarm system and designed to release automatically during emergencies.

4. Re-entry Access from Staircases

Panic-bar doors at designated levels must include trim locks on the unexposed side to allow firefighter re-entry access.

5. Fire Curtains Cannot Replace Fire Doors

Fire curtains are permitted only for compartmentation and cannot serve as designated exit doors.

6. Minimum 30-Minute Insulation

Every fire door installed in an exit route must provide at least 30 minutes of insulation performance.

Where 120-Minute Fire Doors Are Now Mandatory

NBCS 2026 specifically mandates 120-minute fire-rated doors in several critical applications:

Firefighting Shafts — Clause 2.24

Firefighting shafts must be enclosed within:

120-minute fire-resistant construction

120-minute fire doors at every floor level

Horizontal Exits — Clause 2.40

Horizontal exits must include:

120-minute fire doors

Matching 120-minute fire barriers separating compartments and refuge areas

High-Rise & Special Buildings — Clauses 4.4.2.4.3.1 & 4.4.2.4.3.2

All internal fire exit staircases must include:

Non-combustible construction

Minimum 120-minute fire resistance

120-minute fire doors at staircase access points

Revised Staircase Width Requirements

Hotels: Minimum 1.50 m

Hospitals: Minimum 2.00 m
