Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) offers medical humanitarian assistance to people based solely on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender, or political affiliation. Our teams of doctors, nurses, logisticians, and other frontline workers are often among the first on the scene when peoples’ lives are upended by conflict, disease outbreaks, or natural or human-made disasters.
We believe that the principles of impartiality and neutrality are not synonymous with silence. When the world turns its back on crises, we are duty-bound to raise our voices and speak out on behalf of our patients. Our decision to do so is always guided by our mission to do no harm, preserve respect and dignity, and protect life and health.

Our Palestinian staff in Gaza have worked tirelessly throughout a year of devastation and violence, providing care to patients while bearing the burden of war on a personal level, including the loss of loved ones and repeated displacement by Israeli forces' evacuation orders. Deputy medical coordinator of Nasser Hospital Dr. Mohammed Abu Mughaiseb reflects on his and his family's life before the war began last October.

We're teaming up with Puerto Rico Salud and other local organizations to get COVID-19 vaccines to some of the most vulnerable and hard to reach communities on the island. Last year MSF worked closely with grassroots organizations in Puerto Rico to provide medical aid to underserved groups affected by COVID-19. Some of our Puerto Rican team members went on to create a new organization, Puerto Rico Salud, to carry on this vital work. Together, we aim to vaccinate 6,000 people according to certain risk factors, including people experiencing homelessness, living in long-term care facilities, or with disabilities. Even as the vaccine rollout ramps up throughout the country, Puerto Rico has one of the lowest vaccination rates among US states and territories, highlighting disparities in access to medical services and a lag in administering doses.

The essential workers who clean, cook, and do laundry for the residents of nursing homes in the United States play a critical role in stopping the spread of COVID-19. Yet these environmental services (EVS) staff rarely get the infection prevention and control (IPC) training they need to protect themselves and the vulnerable people they assist day in and day out. Watch our new video on how we brought in-person IPC training to long-term care facilities in the US during COVID-19: https://youtu.be/QH3-fmybfYk
