Two thirds of the country receives less than two inches of rain a year, while its western mountains are the wettest ground in Arabia. Farmers have cut those slopes into stone terraces for close to five thousand years. Roman geographers called the region Arabia Felix, Happy Arabia.

The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates on the southeastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, about 32,300 square miles, slightly larger than South Carolina. Roughly 11.3 million people live here, and only about twelve in every hundred are citizens; more than a third come from India. The capital, Abu Dhabi, sits on an island, and dunes cover most of the land behind it. There is no permanent river. In April 2024 a weather station near Al Ain recorded about ten inches of rain in under a day.

Oman sits on the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, with about 5.4 million residents and a coastline of nearly 2,000 miles. Every summer, the southwest monsoon brings the khareef to Dhofar, turning the hills around Salalah green with fog while Muscat bakes above 100°F. In the north, the Hajar Mountains expose one of the largest slices of ancient ocean floor on land, rock that reacts with carbon dioxide and stores it as stone. Researchers from Columbia University have studied the process for years, and in 2024 Amazon's Climate Pledge Fund and Breakthrough Energy Ventures joined a $37 million round for a carbon-removal startup working there.
