🏴‍☠️ Dawn Dusk's Note -----------------------------------

Calling Imu by Name (and Insulting Him)

Interestingly, even though it’s only in his thoughts, Harald refers to Imu as “イムめ” — “that damned Imu.”
Because so few people even know Imu exists, everyone who does usually calls him “イム様” — “Lord Imu,” or “御大” — “Ontai,” both of which show a very high level of respect.
So the fact that we finally have a character who dares to drop all honorifics and say “イムめ” — “that damn Imu” — is actually a pretty shocking and fascinating moment.
Going forward, Imu’s existence will almost certainly become known to the world.
When that happens, the question becomes:
How will he instill fear in the people of the world?
And what will the world think of Imu once they finally know who he is?
Those are big points to watch from here on.

Imu’s Manipulation — and Those Who Copied It

I believe there’s someone who learned about what happened on Owl’s Top and then incorporated that idea into their own plans.
That person is Doflamingo.
Just as Imu controlled Harald using a demonic power, Doflamingo ruled Dressrosa by manipulating people with his string abilities—and by using Sugar’s “ホビホビの実” — “Hobi Hobi no Mi” — to forcibly turn people into puppets through “契約” — “contracts.”
That approach was probably inspired by what he already knew about Imu’s previous actions.
When you line up the timeline, the connection becomes very interesting.
Doflamingo reclaimed his throne in Dressrosa 10 years ago. At that time, Sugar was already part of his crew.
But 13 years ago, during Rosinante’s operation to steal the Ope Ope no Mi, neither Sugar nor Monet were part of the family, and Law had no idea Sugar even existed.
The Harald manipulation incident happened 14 years ago.
Because Doflamingo was connected to the World Government, he almost certainly knew they wanted a giant army. And his previous lines and actions strongly imply he already knew about the God’s Knights.
So for someone like him, acquiring information about what happened in Elbaph would have been extremely easy.
If that’s the case, then after learning about Imu’s 14-years-ago manipulation of Harald and focusing on the idea of “契約” — “contract,” he must have identified the potential of the “ホビホビの実” — “Hobi Hobi no Mi.”
Then, within the next four years, he gave that Devil Fruit to the newly joined child Sugar, allowing him to carry out his plan to take Dressrosa.
Which means the tragic events of Dressrosa may actually trace back to the incident in Elbaph.
And the little trivia panel at the start of the Elbaph arc — showing Hajrudin being controlled by Doflamingo’s strings — is clearly meant to echo the way Imu controlled Harald.

Natural English: “to pull away from,” “to break free from,” “to step out of (a harmful cycle).”
Breakdown
脱(だつ datsu)= to remove, to escape, to shed.
脚(きゃく kyaku)= originally “legs,” but in compounds like 脱脚 it refers to stepping out from a situation.
脱脚(だっきゃく dakkaku)= to free oneself from a negative pattern or tradition.
~させる = causative, “to make (something) break free,” “to lead (someone or something) out of.”
Why it’s difficult
脱脚 is not everyday vocabulary.
It means more than “stop fighting” — Harold wanted to pull Elbaph out of its violent historical cycle and guide the nation into a new future.
This nuance is about escaping the mindset and legacy of war, not merely ending battles.

Natural English: “Form a full-fledged warrior army.”
Breakdown
組織せよ(そしきせよ soshiki seyo)= imperative form of “organize,” strong command tone.
Why it’s difficult
The grammar “~せよ” is a strict, top-down command used in classical and military contexts.
It carries the weight of an absolute order — not a request, not advice — showing Imu’s domination over Harold.

Natural English: “a mobilized war fleet,” “an armed expeditionary fleet.”
Breakdown
挙兵(きょへい kyohei)= raising an army, mobilizing troops.
Why it’s difficult
挙兵 is a historical–military term used in chronicles of rebellions and warlords.
Combined with 船団, it refers to a structured, government-backed military fleet — essentially a second navy under Elbaph.

Natural English: “to atone for history,” “to repay the sins of the past.”
Breakdown
償う(つぐなう tsugunau)= to atone, to compensate, to make amends.
Why it’s difficult
This is poetic and heavy.
償う usually applies to personal wrongdoing — using it with 歴史 turns it into “atoning for the sins of an entire people across centuries.”
It expresses Harold’s self-sacrifice and guilt as a representative of the giants.

Natural English: “Do not talk back.”
Breakdown
口答え(くちごたえ kuchigotae)= retorting, talking back to a superior.
するな = “don’t do it.”
Why it’s difficult
口答え contains a strong hierarchical nuance.
It shows Imu overpowering Harold mentally — treating him as someone with no right to question anything.
It’s not conversational; it’s domination.

Natural English: “No matter what you think in your mind…”
Breakdown
頭で(あたまで atama de)= in your head.
何を考えようとも(なにをかんがえようとも nani wo kangae you tomo)= no matter what you try to think; concessive volitional: “even if you attempt to think otherwise.”
Why it’s difficult
This phrasing is used when overriding a person’s free will.
Imu is explaining that intentions no longer matter — the contract forces Harold’s body to obey regardless of his thoughts.

Natural English: “to be taken over,” “to be hijacked,” “to be seized from the inside.”
Breakdown
乗っ取る(のっとる nottoru)= to take over, to seize control (of a place, organization, or even a nation).
~られる = passive form, “to be taken over.”
Why it’s difficult
This verb implies forceful seizure — not simply “influenced.”
Harold realizes that Elbaph, its government, and its future are being stolen by Imu under the guise of cooperation.

Natural English: “They never intended to welcome us into the circle of nations.”
Breakdown
世界の輪(せかいのわ sekai no wa)= the circle of nations, global community.
入れる気(いれるき ireru ki)= intention of letting in.
などなかった = emphatic “there was absolutely none,” rejecting the idea entirely.
Why it’s difficult
The structure ~気などなかった adds bitterness and disillusionment.
It means not just “they didn’t plan to,” but “they never had even the slightest intention.”
It marks Harold’s moment of realizing he has been deceived from the start.
