'EK THA GEOLOGIST'.... It is with profound grief, I report the demise of my close friend, Prof Dhiraj Mohan Banerjee. On 23.08.2026, After his morning tea he suffered a heart attack and left this world. A post graduate of Lucknow university, Dhiraj was a geoscientist of international fame. He had multi checkered carrier. He served in Ground Water Board, Geological Survey of India and finally landed in Delhi University. His seminal contributions ranged from stratigraphy, tectonics, geochemistry and environmental geology. With numerous publications to his credit, he co-authored a remarkable book on the geology of India. Amongst many awards, including lifetime achievement awards of various institutions, he was a recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award by Government of India, received by the hands of the President of India. He was a distinguished and very active Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi. He also served as an Editor of the Proceedings of the Academy.
Besides being a remarkable scientist, Dhiraj Mohan was an excellent human being, always ready to help the needy and promote the cause of science. He was endowed with rare leadership qualities, he organized several international conferences, and it was his effort that the International Geological Congress 2020 was scheduled to be held in India, which due to COVID was conducted online. He was the moving spirit behind its organisation, and saw the publication of Guide Books for various traverses planned during the conference.
He leaves behind his son, and a brilliant granddaughter.
Dhiraj will be missed by a plethora of his admirers and students.
My heartfelt condolences to his son, daughter-in-law, and brilliant granddaughter, Krittika. I pray for the Moksha of his soul. Om Shanti Shanti (Courtesy: Text- Facebook post by Om Bhargava, Photo: Facebook posts by Sanjeev Kumar Varshney, Prof. NV Chalapathi Rao)
