Oakland’s MACRO Is Reimagining Public Safety 💛

In the wake of national calls for change, Oakland launched MACRO, Mobile Assistance Community Responders of Oakland — a non-police response program for mental health crises, wellness checks, and quality-of-life support.

📺 Recently, @abc7newsbayarea spotlighted MACRO’s powerful work, reminding us that compassion is public safety.

Launched in 2022, MACRO provides a non-police response to non-violent, non-emergency calls — such as wellness checks, behavioral health concerns, and community support needs. The program is staffed by trained community responders and EMTs focused on de-escalation and service connection.

MACRO continues to grow thanks to community engagement and interagency collaboration. As we reflect on the changes since 2020, this story highlights the importance of alternative responses within Oakland’s public safety ecosystem.
