In 1897, Louis Semple Clark launched "Autocar No. 1," a 3-wheeled, single-cylinder gas vehicle. By 1899, Autocar introduced America’s first commercial truck, built to carry 700 lbs with either a 5 or 8 HP engine. It featured the engine under the seat—a design that led to today’s cabover style.
