"Alexa, let there be light."

The light turns on in a second.

Simple... or so it seems.

What we don't see is what happens in between.

Your voice first gets processed by your voice assistant/speaker (Alexa, in this case), then routed through the cloud platform where your device is registered, before finally reaching the light. In many cases, the brand printed on the box isn't involved in that journey at all.

That got us asking a bigger question.

How much of India's smart home ecosystem is actually built by the brands selling these devices?

The answer led us to some fascinating discoveries.

We looked at:

* Why so many smart home apps look and behave almost identically.
* Why many affordable smart devices stop being "smart" when your internet goes down.
• What your smart home knows about you, from your daily routine to when your home is likely to be empty.
* Why you often need a different app for every brand in your home.
* And why a standard called Matter could completely change the way smart homes work over the next few years.

If you're planning to automate your home, or are simply curious about the technology behind the products we use every day, this is a story worth reading. Link in the comments.

IPL 2026 is in full swing. Every evening, millions are arguing about toss decisions, teams, Virat's strike rate and who should bat at number four.

But there's a story playing out at one of India's most iconic venues that has nothing and everything to do with cricket.

At M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, eleven seats have stayed empty through every match this season. No signs. Just eleven seats that nobody sits in. They're for the eleven fans who never came home from RCB's title celebration last June. A stampede outside the stadium killed them. Over thirty more were injured.

Cricket at Chinnaswamy was shut down for ten months after that. The Karnataka government told RCB: prove this stadium is safe, or IPL doesn't come back here.

RCB's answer was a ₹7 crore infrastructure overhaul. And the centrepiece is something most fans inside the stadium don't even notice.

500+ AI enabled CCTV cameras now cover every gate, ramp, corridor, stand, and food court. They're powered by JARVIS, a video analytics platform by Staqu Technologies, already deployed at the G20 Summit and with multiple state police forces. Three video walls feed a command centre. Live feeds go directly to the Bengaluru Police Commissioner's office.

These cameras don't just record. They track crowd density per zone, in real time, and detect bottlenecks at ramps and staircases before they turn dangerous. They can actually tell the difference between 40,000 fans jumping after a last over six and a crowd surge where people are trying to get out.

Tickets went fully digital with QR codes. Gates are colour-coded to match seat assignments. Holding areas outside the stadium absorb pressure before it hits the turnstiles. Six new entry gates. Bengaluru Metro running till 1 AM on match nights.

On opening night, the same system helped Bengaluru Police catch a phone theft gang, tracing suspects across 500+ cameras and leading to 13 arrests in 48 hours. That wasn't even the plan.

Cricket came back to Chinnaswamy. The system worked. And now every mall, temple, metro station, and campus in India that handles large crowds is staring at the same question: can your cameras warn you before something goes wrong?
