Searching for silent field :)

Hey! I’m Dominik. I’ve been a sound designer and field recordist for over 13 years. I currently work as a sound designer at SourceSound studio, designing sounds for movies and game trailers (like Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc.).

But my biggest passion is recording nature... especially her more extreme moments :)

I use mics like the Sennheiser DMS setup (2x 8040 & 8030),
a Sennheiser 8020 stereo pair in a SASS array,
and recorders such as the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II and Zoom F6.

All of my recordings are authentic and captured directly in the field. I also try to share some behind-the-scenes content in Shorts and posts whenever I can.

whenever I get a chance to record a place I probably won't be able to visit again, I record it on cassette. I always archive my best sound memories on something physical, so I can listen to them years later without even turning on a computer

Probably my favorite location for recording thunderstorms. High up in the rocks where the thunder gets beautiful natural reflections.
This time recorded mid-side with an omni for the mid MKH 8020 & 8030.
Wind hitting this tree gave me that classic howling wind that I also love using in trailer and movie sound design.

Silent Field

I very rarely catch any weird or creepy sounds while recording night atmospheres. Since I usually leave the mics running the whole night (sometimes even for a few days) out in the woods, I occasionally end up with something other than just storms :)
Two days ago storms were supposed to come through, so I hid the mics deep in the forest the day before so I could capture the whole thing. In the end no storm showed up, so today I went to pick everything up and was seriously considering just formatting the card without even listening. Curiosity got the better of me though, and I thought maybe I’d at least catch some interesting animal or something.
What I got was way weirder. Right around 4 a.m these screams started and went on for about 10 minutes. No idea if someone just needed to let it all out and scream in the middle of the woods at 4 a.m.… but if I’d been out there and heard that, it would’ve properly freaked me out :)

Silent Field

When I was scrolling through some old pics from last winter, I stumbled on this one. Completely forgot about it. Was in Austria on a frozen lake. The person in the distance is my girlfriend and my son ran towards her but was too scared to step on the ice. Love this photo. Oh and btw, I also filmed a video on that lake that I still haven’t posted. If you want, I can post it later
