Trigger Warning (TW):

Important reminder that March is Women’s History Month 💙💜💖

In addition to Women’s History Month, March is also Endometriosis Awareness Month 🎗️❤️‍🩹

For anyone who doesn’t know what endometriosis is, endometriosis is a condition where tissue that is similar to that of the uterus grows outside of the lining on the uterus, on other organs around the uterus, & on other places in the body. In some cases for some women & girls with the condition, this tissue has been found growing in the area of the brain or eyes for example. This can be scary 😳, but this example of endometriosis shows how endometriosis tissue can grow anywhere in the body, even in places you wouldn't expect it to grow in.

Statistically speaking, around 1 out of 10 women & girls globally (at least 10% of women & girls worldwide) have endometriosis. It’s under diagnosed though, due to discrimination done against women & girls in the medical & research industries over the years, as well as the lack of understanding & awareness of the condition still.

As a result, there has been a lack of both resources for an official diagnosis & the right treatment for the condition over the years. In addition, a lot of medical gaslighting has been done to women & girls for years when it came to this condition, telling women & girls to “deal with it,” that they’re “making it up” or “complaining over a period,” & that “it’s just another bad period” that happens in every female menstrual cycle for example. I’ve been told these excuses too throughout my life in school especially, & I don’t put up with that at all. Personally having an irregular menstrual cycle since my early teens to where I cannot move, feel constantly fatigued & bloated, feel like I’m gonna pass out, & have horrible nausea & heavy bleeding in the process once a month (let alone twice a month at times) is NOT a normal cycle at all!

As a result currently still, it takes at least an average of 7-10 years for women & girls to get an official diagnosis. On top of this, the average age range for getting the diagnosis is somewhere between the ages of 26 to 34 years old. The main “official” way over the years to get “formally” diagnosed with endometriosis has been through a labroscopy surgery. For a labroscopy, it’s important to make sure that the endometriosis can be identified & detected with an endometriosis specialist on where the endometrial tissue has grown throughout the body to prepare for the surgery beforehand. A labroscopy is a very serious surgery, & it needs to be taken more seriously, especially for patients with endometriosis.

Birth control has also been used as an option for patients with endometriosis or symptoms of endometriosis to balance hormones & relieve pain, depending on the individual’s situation & symptoms. Birth control can be a controversial topic though, where it can be looked at as a temporary medical bandaid or a way for doctors to dismiss patients concerned about their symptoms (which has unfortunately happened to some patients who have endometriosis or symptoms of endometriosis in the past). Despite the claim that birth control can prevent any more endometrial tissue from growing, the problem is that that’s not always the case.

Birth control doesn’t get rid of the condition, & it could worsen the condition as a result in some cases (again, depends on the individual’s symptoms & situation). On top of this, birth control could also delay the chances of getting an official diagnosis in some cases. Again though, every woman & girl’s symptoms, health, & situations with endometriosis can vary, as well as how they want to take care of their reproductive health (whether or not they use birth control). Going to an endometriosis specialist about this is super important in this case.

Endometriosis can also be very difficult to detect sometimes to where it cannot at times show up on an ultrasound or even an MRI scan.

Endometriosis is very concerning, because leaving it untreated can lead to more worse symptoms, including ovarian cysts, more horrible & heavy menstrual cycles, chronic fatigue, miscarriages, & organ damage from scar tissue done by the growing endometrial issue. Endometriosis can also cause gruesome pain during intercourse.

The symptoms for endometriosis can vary, because everyone’s body is different & can have different varying symptoms mentioned before.

Endometriosis also has 4 stages, with Stage 1 being the earliest stage of detection & Stage 4 with it being severe (severe organ damage by the grown endometrial tissue for example).

In addition to endometriosis, another condition that exists is called adenomyosis, which is where the endometrial tissue from the endometrial lining grows inside the walls of the uterus or inside the uterus. There have been cases where some women & girls have both conditions or either one. The only “cure” currently for adenomyosis is a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). However, a hysterectomy cannot & won’t cure endometriosis. Even without the uterus, the endometrial tissue can still grow in other parts all over the body (again, including the eyes & brain). There is no definite “cure” for endometriosis, & this condition can last for the rest of a woman’s or girl’s life.

However, the good news is that there is more awareness about both conditions in comparison to past decades. More researchers globally are also working on doing more research on endometriosis (& adenomyosis in addition) & spreading more awareness about both conditions as a result. They’re also working on more ways women & girls can get properly & formally diagnosed without an invasive surgery (menstrual blood test, saliva test, etc. for example), which would drastically shorten the amount of time it has taken to get a diagnosis in the past. This will also help work on giving more women & girls the right treatment for the condition before they need to get a labroscopy if needed (endo-mapping for example).

If you know someone who has endometriosis and/or adenomyosis (or symptoms of both conditions to where they need to get a diagnosis & more answers on their symptoms), please believe them, listen to them, & please don’t gaslight them. They’re telling the truth, & they’re not crazy. Do what you can to educate yourself on these two conditions for more awareness. Please make sure to also do what you can to help them out on their health journey to getting a diagnosis & the right treatment for their health & lives.

If you’re a woman or girl & you have (or you find out you may have) endometriosis (and/or adenomyosis) based on the symptoms you’re experienced throughout your life, please make sure to go get it checked with the right doctor who will listen to you (endometriosis excision expert or endometriosis specialist preferably for example). Also, please advocate for yourself continuously, & don’t give up. You’re not crazy, & you were never crazy this whole time. Don’t listen to anyone who continues to gaslight you about your symptoms & situation. Please know too that there are people in this world who will believe you & work to help you get a diagnosis & the right treatment for your condition. Sending lots of love & comfort your way 🫂❤️‍🩹🎗️

I’m sharing some more photos I found & took of Hera from when since she was a kitten. These photos are of her wanting to get more attention from me or another family member & of her wanting to play when getting the cat zoomies, no matter the holiday or special occasion. It’s adorable & hillarious 🎄🐱🥹🥰😊🫶💖💚🖤👑💜
