I saw SINNERS last night and absolutely loved it. I highly recommend checking it out in theaters if you can. Unfortunately the exhibition of the film at my local ‪@amctheatres‬ was ATROCIOUS. My friend Alex and I surmised that the projector bulb was in desperate need of being changed. There were non-stop distracting green reflections/artifacts through the film. Not only that but the colors and contrast were - I'm sure - not at all what Ryan Coogler and DP Autumn Durald Arkapaw envisioned for their film.
The industry wonders why people aren't going to the theater anymore... maybe because projectors are uncalibrated and bulbs are well beyond their expiration. The seats are tattered and malfunctioning. The motorized aprons that frame films with aspect ratios that don't fill the screen are never used and this causes the image to spill onto the unused portion of the screen (very distracting). The concessions area is an absolute mess - spilled soda, popcorn everywhere, trash covering drink stations.
Not only that - AMC's prices for concessions are absurd. $18 for a "regular" popcorn and soda. No refills on popcorn unless you buy the large. Without a few Stubs rewards and discounts, I would have paid close to $40 to see a movie with a popcorn and a drink. If you're going to charge these prices you better keep the theater clean and projectors perfectly calibrated.
I rarely go to AMC Theaters because of these conditions. Fortunately there's an ‪@AlamoDrafthouse‬ here in Omaha as well as the excellent non-profit ‪@FilmStreams‬ where high quality exhibition is a part of their DNA.
You can do better, AMC. If you're scratching your head as to why attendance is low... don't blame Hollywood, the Streamers or home theater systems.

Spotted a decent sale on B&H for these 28TB Seagate Expansion Desktop drives. I use the 8TB versions to back up my YouTube archives here in the studio. If you've got a lot of client work clogging up your main drives and you're ready to archive it, consider snagging one of these. $60 off at $329.99 USD.

Not gonna lie... you gotta love it when a video riiiiiips on your channel. This one took a lot of time to put together - both organizing my thoughts in a coherent way (I think this video could have easily been 30 mins with all I could have said about the io news) and sourcing all the clips that helped illustrate my points.
Over the last year+ my channel has stagnated while I did some soul searching to figure out how I wanted to find balance between art/creativity and commerce and how to earn a living as a full-time YouTuber without selling my soul to the Marketing/Advertising world... I think I've found my path forward in all of this and videos like this one will absolutely be part of my work on the channel.
Thanks to all of my current subscribers for checking it out and welcome to my new subscribers! I know my work covers a wider range of topics than most subscribers seem to prefer, but I want to be sure my channel is an accurate reflection of what I love to teach, ponder and curate.
I've got a quick little Final Cut Pro video in the hopper for next week with plenty of channel member videos queued up as well. It's good to be back and focused on the channel again, and I thank all of you who continue to show up for my posts, Shorts and videos - your support and encouragement is FUEL. Thank you!

I spent over an hour working with ChatGPT to generate an idea I had for the thumbnail for my upcoming video where I wonder: The Future of Final Cut Pro is... Death?
I know I've been mysterious about this but hang in there! I'm still putting the finishing touches on my script, and I'll be rolling cameras tomorrow with the the hope of getting the video out Wednesday.
What do you think of this thumbnail?

My good buddy ‪@BrandonTalbotCC‬ has a really fun video out on his channel - subscribe!. He's asking some of his favorite creators (including me!) if they had to choose between photo or video which one they'd choose. And then... which camera and lens combo?
Check out answers from ‪@Serge1913‬, ‪@Jason_Hermann‬, ‪@Josh_Sattin‬, ‪@cammackey‬, ‪@TerryWarfield‬, ‪@tombuck‬, ‪@chrisbrockhurst‬, ‪@dunnadidit‬ and ‪@TeppoHaapoja‬!

I went to dinner and a movie last night with some friends and sadly the theater was empty! It didn't help that across the street the Big Ten college baseball tournament was going on (go Illinois!). We saw the 4k restoration of Bruce Robinson's 1989 film "How To Get Ahead In Advertising" starring Richard E. Grant. It's a "diabolically dark satire of runaway capitalism in Margaret Thatcher–era England. With fantastically fleshy body-horror effects and flourishes of gonzo surrealism, this tour de force of verbal jousting and physical comedy is a caustic Jekyll-and-Hyde tale for the greed-is-good 1980s.
Grant gives a virtuosically crazed performance as an ambitious advertising exec whose latest assignment—devising a campaign for a pimple cream—has him on the edge of a nervous breakdown. When he sprouts an enormous boil on his shoulder—one that not only talks but has evil ambitions of its own—a twisted battle of wills ensues." - from the Film Streams website (filmstreams.org/films/how-to-get-ahead-in-advertis…)
As content creators/influencers it can be a struggle when confronted with the possibility of making pretty dang good money if you succumb to endlessly promoting products on your channel. I've spent the last few years trying to get my head around the dark side of "influencer marketing" where greed is perhaps good and it's incredibly difficult to resist attracting and extracting from our audiences. I've embraced the light side and always try to focus on education and curation rather than soulless promotion. It can be difficult, though, when the bank account is low.
Watching this film was timely and certainly helpful in focusing on my values and convictions when it comes to being a YouTuber with a growing audience.
If you work in marketing or advertising or have built an audience of your own, an audience that trusts your insights and opinions and judgement... I'd be curious to know what you think of "How To Get Ahead In Advertising"...
