Indian Idol Fame Prashant Tamang Dies at 42 in Delhi
New Delhi, January 11, 2026 Prashant Tamang, the beloved Indian singer and actor who won Indian Idol Season 3 and became a cultural icon for the Gorkha community, passed away today. He was 42 years old. Tamang was declared brought dead at a hospital in Dwarka, New Delhi at around 9:00 AM after returning to the capital following a performance in Arunachal Pradesh. According to initial reports, he had no major health concerns or complaints prior to his death.
Born on 4 January 1983 in Darjeeling, West Bengal, Tamang rose from humble beginnings to nationwide fame. After losing his father at a young age, he joined the Kolkata Police as a constable to support his family, performing in the police orchestra. His journey to stardom began when he auditioned for Indian Idol Season 3 in 2007, eventually winning the competition and capturing the hearts of millions across India and abroad.
Tamang’s success on Indian Idol not only propelled his own career but also inspired an entire generation of aspiring musicians from the Gorkha and Nepali-speaking communities. His win was celebrated as a moment of immense pride, and he went on to release music, perform internationally, and work in Nepali cinema.
Beyond music, he expanded into acting, appearing in several Nepali films and more recently in popular Indian digital content, including the acclaimed web series Paatal Lok Season -2
Leaders and organizations across communities have begun paying tribute. The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh, Assam State General Secretary Nanda Kirati Dewan issued a statement on X and Facebook expressing deep condolences, describing his passing as “an irreparable loss to the Gorkha community and society.” Tamang’s legacy extends beyond his artistic achievements: he is remembered for representing his culture on national platforms, inspiring youth, and bringing visibility to the Gorkha community’s talents on the global stage, Dewan added condoling his friend's death sharing it on social media.
More obituaries and tributes from fellow artists, political figures, community leaders and fans are expected throughout the day.
