🇳🇬🪂🌊 NIGERIAN MILITARY COURSE TAGS: “BIRD IN FLIGHT” & “CROCODILE” (WHAT THEY REALLY MEAN) If you’ve ever seen a Nigerian soldier and noticed a small tag on the uniform that shows BIRD IN FLIGHT or CROCODILE, just know one thing… That tag is not for fashion. It’s not for branding. It’s not for “soft life.” That small tag is military language for: “I’ve been trained for serious terrain. Don’t try me.” 😮💨🔥 🐦 BIRD IN FLIGHT (AIRBORNE QUALIFICATION) The Bird in Flight tag is worn by soldiers who have completed Airborne training. Meaning they are trained and qualified for parachute operations , yes, jumping from aircraft like it’s a normal Tuesday. This course involves: intense physical training parachute drills landing techniques airborne assault tactics survival and combat readiness So when you see “BIRD IN FLIGHT” on a soldier’s uniform, it simply means: 🐦 “I can enter the battlefield from the sky.” No road needed. No shortcut needed. Just sky, wind, and mission. 🐊 CROCODILE (AMPHIBIOUS QUALIFICATION) Now the Crocodile tag is for soldiers trained for amphibious and riverine warfare, meaning operations in water environments like: 🌊 rivers 🌿 creeks 🏝️ coastal areas 🛶 swamps This course is highly relevant in Nigeria, especially in areas like the Niger Delta where the battlefield is not always land. Training includes: swimming survival drills water endurance training boat operations and navigation river crossing under pressure waterborne tactical insertion So when you see “CROCODILE” on a soldier’s uniform, it means: 🐊 “If you hide inside water, you’ve entered my office.” 😭🔥 🎖️ WHY THESE TAGS ARE RESPECTED Because nobody gets them by mouth. You earn them through: 💪 suffering 🧠 discipline 🔥 endurance 🏃 serious training These tags are not “nice design.” They are proof of capability. 🇳🇬 FINAL WORD So next time you see a Nigerian soldier wearing BIRD IN FLIGHT or CROCODILE, understand the message: One is trained to strike from the air. The other is trained to dominate water terrain.
A lot of civilians hear the word “Court Martial” and think it’s just soldiers standing in line while one senior officer shouts “Dismissed!” 😅
No.
A Court Martial is a full military criminal trial and in the Nigerian Armed Forces, once your matter enters Court Martial territory, it is no longer “let’s settle it in the office.” It becomes law, evidence, witnesses, judgement… and consequences.
WHAT IS COURT MARTIAL? Court Martial is the military’s official court used to try personnel for serious offences under the Armed Forces Act. It is not the same thing as “Orderly Room punishment” (which is for minor offences).
Court Martial is for cases that can: destroy a career lead to dismissal lead to prison sentence and in extreme cases, carry the highest punishment
WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN? Court Martial is usually triggered when an offence is considered too serious to be handled by unit commanders.
Examples include: desertion / AWOL loss of rifle/ammunition during operations insubordination or assault on a superior theft and fraud armed robbery rape murder illegal arms dealing mutiny-related offences
HOW DOES IT START? The process often begins with: complaint/report arrest or confinement to guardroom investigation by Military Police/Provost or intelligence witness statements and evidence gathering
WHO ORDERS COURT MARTIAL? A Court Martial does not just happen because someone is angry. It must be formally approved by a senior military authority known as the Convening Authority.
This could be: GOC Division Commander Theatre Commander Service Chiefs
WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE COURT MARTIAL? A Court Martial is made up of: a President of the Court (senior officer) panel members (officers sitting as the court) Judge Advocate (legal officer guiding the court) Prosecutor (military lawyer) Defence counsel (military or civilian lawyer) The accused is served a charge sheet, and asked to plead: Guilty Not Guilty If not guilty, the trial begins properly: prosecution presents witnesses and evidence defence cross-examines defence presents their own case final arguments are made verdict is delivered
IF FOUND GUILTY… Punishments may include: imprisonment reduction in rank dismissal from service forfeiture of pay/benefits loss of seniority
VERY IMPORTANT In Nigeria, many Court Martial verdicts still require confirmation by higher authority before they become final. And yes the accused also has the right to appeal.
THE TRUTH Court Martial is not just “discipline.” It is the military saying: “Your action is now a threat to the system.” Because in military operations, one careless decision can cost lives, compromise security, or ruin national reputation. That’s why Court Martial is taken seriously. 📌 In the Nigerian military, you can recover from mistakes… but some mistakes will take you straight to Court Martial.
WHY THE COAS WEARS A BLACK BERET (NIGERIAN ARMY CONTEXT)
A lot of Nigerians keep asking why the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) is wearing a black beret, when for years we were used to seeing COAS appear mostly in green berets. The answer is simple: tradition + corps background.
Traditionally, the green beret has become the popular COAS beret over the years, not because it is “officially compulsory,” but because most COAS appointed in Nigeria have historically been Infantry officers. And Infantry officers are naturally identified with the green beret.
That is why for a long time, Nigerians associated the COAS position with the green beret.
Even Lt General Bambazu, who was of the Military Police, wore the green beret when he became COAS — simply because it had become a long-standing tradition linked to the office, largely influenced by Infantry dominance at the top.
However, the current COAS, Lt General W. Shaibu, is of the Armoured Corps of the Nigerian Army, and the Armoured Corps is traditionally identified with the black beret. So his black beret is not random. It is not fashion.
It is not “new policy.” It is simply the COAS wearing the beret that represents his fighting corps identity — the Armoured Corps. In short:
Green beret became common because many past COAS were Infantry. Black beret is being seen now because the current COAS is Armoured Corps. And that’s the whole story — tradition meets background.
WHO IS A LIEUTENANT COLONEL (LT COL) IN THE NIGERIAN ARMY? 🇳🇬🪖
A Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) is a senior commissioned officer in the Nigerian Army trusted with serious leadership responsibilities.
This is not a “small rank” — this is where real command and decision-making starts.
✅ Above Major ✅ Below Colonel
A Lt Col can serve as: 🔹 Commanding Officer (CO) of a Battalion 🔹 Senior Operations/Staff Officer in formations 🔹 Training Commander 🔹 Key administrative and operational leader
At this level, the officer is responsible for: 🔥 Troop discipline 🔥 Mission execution 🔥 Operational planning 🔥 Welfare and readiness of soldiers
A Lieutenant Colonel is a leader shaped by: ✔️ Years of service ✔️ Tactical experience ✔️ Military training courses ✔️ Discipline and dedication
In short: A Lt Col is not just an officer… He is a battle-tested leader trusted to deliver results for the nation. 🇳🇬
Today, history didn’t just happen — history wore a uniform and saluted back.
From a gender perspective, the promotion and decoration of MWO Eno Essien (AHQ DAT DCC) to the rank of Captain is more than a personal achievement. It is a statement. A breakthrough. A reminder that excellence has no gender.
On her decoration day, the MC announced something powerful: in the history of the Nigerian Army, she is the first female to benefit from this Concessional Promotion to the rank of Captain.
That moment wasn’t just about rank — it was about representation.
For every woman who has ever been underestimated… For every female soldier who has had to work twice as hard to be seen… For every young girl who dreams of wearing the uniform and leading with pride…
This is proof that the ceiling can crack.
MWO Eno Essien’s journey reflects focus, dedication to duty, discipline, self-respect, and a standard worthy of emulation. She didn’t beg for recognition — she earned it. She didn’t demand respect — she commanded it through performance.
This is the reward of hard work. This is what resilience looks like. This is what happens when a woman decides that her limits will not be defined by society.
May God bless her new rank. May God bless the authorities for recognizing her hard work. And may this milestone inspire more women to rise, lead, and break records.
Congratulations Captain Eno Essien. You didn’t just get promoted — you opened a door for others to walk through.

NIGERIAN MILITARY COURT MARTIAL EXPLAINED
A lot of civilians hear the word “Court Martial” and think it’s just soldiers standing in line while one senior officer shouts “Dismissed!” 😅
No.
A Court Martial is a full military criminal trial and in the Nigerian Armed Forces, once your matter enters Court Martial territory, it is no longer “let’s settle it in the office.”
It becomes law, evidence, witnesses, judgement… and consequences.
WHAT IS COURT MARTIAL?
Court Martial is the military’s official court used to try personnel for serious offences under the Armed Forces Act.
It is not the same thing as “Orderly Room punishment” (which is for minor offences).
Court Martial is for cases that can:
destroy a career

and in extreme cases, carry the highest punishment
WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN?
Court Martial is usually triggered when an offence is considered too serious to be handled by unit commanders.
Examples include:
desertion / AWOL
loss of rifle/ammunition during operations
insubordination or assault on a superior
theft and fraud
armed robbery
rape
murder
illegal arms dealing
mutiny-related offences
HOW DOES IT START?
The process often begins with:
complaint/report
arrest or confinement to guardroom
investigation by Military Police/Provost or intelligence
witness statements and evidence gathering
WHO ORDERS COURT MARTIAL?
A Court Martial does not just happen because someone is angry.
It must be formally approved by a senior military authority known as the Convening Authority.
This could be:
GOC
Division Commander
Theatre Commander
Service Chiefs
WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE COURT MARTIAL?
A Court Martial is made up of:
a President of the Court (senior officer)
panel members (officers sitting as the court)
Judge Advocate (legal officer guiding the court)
Prosecutor (military lawyer)
Defence counsel (military or civilian lawyer)
The accused is served a charge sheet, and asked to plead:
Guilty
Not Guilty
If not guilty, the trial begins properly:
prosecution presents witnesses and evidence
defence cross-examines
defence presents their own case
final arguments are made
verdict is delivered
IF FOUND GUILTY…
Punishments may include:
imprisonment
reduction in rank
dismissal from service
forfeiture of pay/benefits
loss of seniority
VERY IMPORTANT

A lot of Nigerians hear “Captain” and assume it’s the same thing across the military.
But no… Army Captain and Navy Captain are two very different beasts.
Same title, completely different level.
Let’s break it down clearly
ARMY CAPTAIN (Nigerian Army)
In the Army, a Captain is a junior commissioned officer.
Rank Level
Comes after Lieutenant
Comes before Major
What an Army Captain Does
An Army Captain is usually:
A Company Second-in-Command
A platoon commander in some cases
A staff officer handling operations, admin, intelligence, logistics etc.
They are respected officers, but still part of the junior officer cadre.
Symbol
Three stars (pips) on the shoulder.
In short:
Army Captain = young officer with growing responsibility.
NAVY CAPTAIN (Nigerian Navy)
Now this is where people get confused.
In the Navy, a Captain is a very senior officer, not a junior one.
Rank Level
A Navy Captain is equivalent to an Army Colonel.
Yes. Colonel.
That means he is far above:
Lieutenant Commander
Commander
What a Navy Captain Does
A Navy Captain can:
Command a major warship
Serve as a Base Commander
Hold top strategic appointments in Naval Headquarters
Lead major operational missions
Symbol
Uses stripes, not stars.
Usually seen with four thick stripes on the sleeve.
In short:
Navy Captain = senior commander, big authority, big responsibility.
THE BIG DIFFERENCE (SIMPLE COMPARISON)
Army Captain
✅ Junior officer
✅ Equivalent to Navy Lieutenant
✅ Mostly tactical field leadership
Navy Captain
✅ Senior officer
✅ Equivalent to Army Colonel
✅ Strategic command leadership
SO WHY ARE THEY BOTH CALLED CAPTAIN?
Because the word “Captain” originally means someone in command.
In the Army, it became a normal officer rank.
In the Navy, it remained a title linked to commanding ships, so it grew into a much higher rank.
---
FINAL WORD
So next time someone says:
“I be Captain for Navy”
Just know that person is not joking.
Because…
Army Captain = mid-level officer.
Navy Captain = heavyweight commander.
Same name. Different power. Different league.
