Rabbi Dovid

Bill’s parents were Jewish assimilationists. Most of their family had perished in the Holocaust so they felt identifying as a Jew was dangerous.

He expressed regret at his lifetime as an uninvolved Jew. UnBar-Mitzvahed.

Before my visit, Bill had been agitated. His aged lips didn’t communicate well, heavily slurring his words. If it weren’t for his wife’s interpreting, there’d be little for me to gather.

As we laid Tefillin for his first time he became more relaxed and chanted the blessings and the Shema with me.

“A late Bar Mitzvah,” I declare “Mazel Tov!”

Bill launched into a joyous, and shockingly articulate, rendition of Hava Nagillah.
